Beck, 124 More, from a press release issued by Team M4 EMGO Suzuki: HEALTHY CARDENAS SEVENTH IN LAGUNA SECA SUPERSPORT Team M4 EMGO Suzuki picked up a top-ten finish in the AMA Supersport race at Laguna Seca today in front of the massive crowd that flocked to the California circuit to attend the combined MotoGP/AMA Superbike weekend. The result was attained by Martin Cardenas in his first Supersport outing aboard his Pirelli-shod GSX-R600 since sustaining injuries in an early-season race crash at Auto Club Speedway. While the Colombian did ride in the Formula Xtreme class at Road America, he is now healthy enough to consider himself ‘officially’ back and it showed on Saturday. Cardenas charged up from 15th on the grid, and despite a brief off-track excursion, still managed to finish in seventh position. Afterwards, Cardenas said, “It could have gone a little better maybe, but I think it went pretty good. My starting position wasn’t very good but I made a good start. I got up to around seventh but ran off the track. I got it going again and I was in 13th or so and I finished seventh. I think that’s an okay result for this race and I hope to do better in the first one. Speaking about his physical condition, he said, “Now I feel very good. At Road America I couldn’t move on the bike and with the race in the wet I was very scared to crash. To me that race didn’t count. This is my first race back and I feel great, almost 100%.” Cardenas’ teammates had a bit tougher go of things on the day. Blake Young finished 11th after starting from the third row and running as high as seventh. Cory West was solidly in the top ten early before his race ended after just three laps due to a mechanical problem. Young finished out the day by taking part in Saturday’s AMA Superbike free practice aboard his Superstock-spec GSX-R1000, ranking 15th fastest at 1:27.073. Tomorrow he’ll both qualify for, and race in, the Superbike final with an eye on gaining information that should prove valuable when the series returns to Laguna Seca for the Superstock finale in September. More, from a press release issued by Pirelli: Rapp Takes Supersport Podium for Pirelli, Fong Gets Famous Racer Steve Rapp rode his Attack Kawasaki to a sound third-place finish in Saturday s AMA Supersport race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, again adding to Pirelli s 2008 record-setting number of AMA podium finishes. Rapp s teammate, Chaz Davies, started the Supersport race from row one but in turn two on the opening lap Rapp was squeezed over into Davies who then fell. Davies remounted and charged from 31st to a hard-earned 16th place finish, carving his way through the field on a set of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires. Meanwhile, Rapp stayed close to the front, running down and passing two riders to take third, where he battled for position for most of the race. On the last lap Rapp was momentarily put back into fourth but won the drag race to the finish line on his ZX-6R to finish third. About Steve s latest podium, Cyrcee, Rapp s girlfriend, grid positioner, and walking marketing machine, said, Life is too short to go slow. Adding to the excitement of Rapp s podium was his race-long challenge from Bobby Fong on a Safety First Suzuki. Fong? Yes, Fong, who had been running strong all weekend long, earned his best ever and first fifth-place finish in an AMA Supersport race at what most consider to be one of the most technical tracks on the calendar. Fong said afterwards, I like the technical tracks better than the fast tracks. I just seem to do better on them. And all the tracks for the rest of the season are technical so you will see me on the podium. Fong s fifth was barely three tenths of a second behind Rapp s third-place finish, showing just how close he is to the podium already. Also finishing in the top ten in Supersport was M4 EMGO Suzuki s Martin Cardenas, coming home an incredible seventh-place finish in just his second race since his devastating crash at Fontana earlier in the season, where he broke his femur. Both Fong and Cardenas ride Suzuki GSX-R600s. Pirelli Tire North America specializes in the manufacture and marketing of high-performance tires for passenger vehicles, motorcycles and motorsports.
