Roccoli, 62 More, from a press release issued by HANNspree Ten Kate Honda: Kenan Sofuoglu crashed out of a comfortable second place in today’s 11th-round World Supersport championship race at Nurburgring in Germany a race won by series leader Cal Crutchlow. Sofuoglu’s Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team-mate, Andrew Pitt, was seventh. Starting from second place on the grid, Sofuoglu challenged Crutchlow on the opening laps, breaking the lap record on lap two. However, as drizzle began to fall on the 5.13km Nurburgring circuit, the Turkish rider slid off at the tight first corner. He lost his right footpeg in the crash but was able to remount in eighteenth place and move up to 10th place before a small bolt that he was resting his right foot on worked itself loose, leaving a bitterly disappointed Sofuoglu unable to continue. Pitt, meanwhile, got a good start from his 10th place on the grid but was affected by the rain in the early stages, when his lap times dropped. The Australian rallied in the second part of the race, however, and climbed as high as sixth before dropping back to seventh at the flag. Andrew Pitt 7th I was basically just too cautious when it was wet and lost too much time. I saw a couple of other riders go down and just took it steady for a couple of laps but came back strong at the end, when my lap times were better and I was able to get into a rhythm. We still need to do some work on improving the way the bike turns I’m just having to wait too long to get on the gas. But we’re going in the right direction and making small steps forward. We’ll have a good base to start with at Imola and know what we have to do. Kenan Sofuoglu DNF I am so disappointed because I was in a good position when I crashed. I felt I had to push to stay with Crutchlow, but I just pushed too hard. I lost the footpeg but the rest of the bike was OK and I was able to do some good lap times before the bolt fell off and I had no alternative but to pull in. I’m sorry for the team who worked so hard to give me a good bike this weekend and I will try to make up for it at Imola. Ronald ten Kate team manager It’s a shame of course, but second position seemed secured until Kenan’s little off. The positive is that we had made a big step forward this weekend and in our small tests during the break. Andrew’s first half was slow, but in the second part of his race he seemed to be quick enough for maybe fourth place. However, we are moving in the right direction and look forward to continuing at Imola. More, from a press release issued by Parkalgar Honda: PARKALGAR HONDA’S Eugene Laverty finished runner-up behind title leader Cal Crutchlow at the 11th round of the World Supersport Championship at the Nurburgring in Germany today and is only 22-points behind him with three races remaining; while Miguel Praia raced in the top 10 before finishing a credible 11th. The next round of the World Supersport Championship is at Imola in Italy on Sunday 27th September and Parkalgar Honda will be going for victory after enjoying a successful test there previously. Eugene: “That wasn’t an easy race with Joan Lascorz pushing right to the end. Second place was the best I could do today and we are only 22-points behind in the Championship table so we still have it all to play for. I am going to keep fighting to beat Cal and at the Imola test we had similar pace so I’ll be going there and pushing for the win.” Miguel: “It was a good race and in reality I should have finished in the top 10 but I was simply not fit enough to last the whole race distance I have the flu. On the last lap I tried to overtake Dell’Omo but went too deep on the brakes and ran on to the grass I tried all I could. After two non-finishes this is a good result and I think normally if I am fit I could have fought with the group battling over seventh and eighth, which is a real positive going into the last three races.” Simon Buckmaster, Parkalgar Honda Team Manager: “Eugene dug deep on the last lap to keep second place under a lot of pressure and in doing so consolidated second place in the Championship. Hats off to Cal Crutchlow, he has been the fastest rider this weekend realistically Eugene is the only rider who can now beat him to the title and 22-points behind means we are still in there fighting. Miguel was inside the top 10 which is excellent and 11th is his second best ever result, so we are all happy with him. He is showing good form towards the end of the season and in the run up to his and the team’s home round at Parkalgar near Portimao in Portugal, in October.” More, from a press release issued by Stiggy Racing Honda: The Nurburgring hosted the 11th round in the World Supersport Championship, but in spite of the improved weather conditions at the German track the much expected progress in the Stiggy Racing Honda Supersport garage stayed out. Gianluca Vizziello tested some new parts for his CBR600RR machine but found little progress in his practice sessions and started the German Supersport race from a low 24th place on the grid. The Italian made up for lost positions as he got off the line well and gradually progressed through the field to finish in 13th place. Anthony West started off well in the wet conditions on Friday, but found his progress halted in the free practice session on Saturday morning when he crashed his number one machine and had to set up his second bike from scratch. A less then perfect start and a difficult race saw him relegated to the lower regions of the sheets for most of the 19-laps around the Nurburgring. Anthony West worked his way forward in the last laps to finish the race in 15th place and maintains his sixth place in the championship standings. Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow dominated the sheets all weekend and extended his lead in the championship by taking the win in the German Supersport race, followed by nearest rival Eugene Laverty and Joan Lascorz in third. Gianluca Vizziello, 13th: “I had a good start and the bike was running well. I was feeling strong since the warm-up this morning, but then I started having great problems with the visor of my helmet that kept fogging up. I constantly had to open and close the visor. I was feeling confident on the bike and I am glad I have brought it back to 13th after starting from a 23rd place.” Anthony West, 15th: 1C;It feels like a very disappointing weekend for me. I needed more time to set the machine up properly after crashing out on Saturday morning and found it hard to find the confidence. I struggled to push hard from the beginning of the race. I am far off from the results I would have liked to achieve here this weekend.” Johan Stigefelt – Team Manager: “It was another difficult weekend for our Supersport riders. To be honest we are still puzzled why we struggle to get the results we are after. Anthony is still stiff from the crash he had in yesterday’s practice. Both riders managed to takes some points home, but we are just too far behind and should be making progress in this part of the season.” More, from a press release issued by ParkinGO Triumph BE1 Racing: Round 11 of World Supersport closes with a result under expectations for team ParkinGO Triumph BE1 Racing as Garry McCoy finished eighth while Gianluca Nannelli had to retire from the race due to a crash after five laps. At the start, the Australian rider lost thirteen places due to clutch release issues. However, he did not give up and recovered several positions finishing eighth, only four seconds behind Massimo Roccoli who took fourth place, although he had a hard time trying to overtake his slower opponents. On the other hand, a crash put a stop to Gianluca Nannelli’s race who was battling to recover positions. GARRY McCOY | Triumph Daytona 675 | 8th: “I’m not happy at all with the result. Unfortunately, my race was already compromised from lap one. After the problem I had at the start, another rider just bumped into me at the first corner. I went wide and lost a lot of positions. I started to climb back again but on this kind of track you lose a lot of time trying to overtake the others. It’s really a pity because I was hoping for a better result”. GIANLUCA NANNELLI | Triumph Daytona 675 | retired: “I’m really sorry for the crash because we had a good a setup and I thought I could score a great result. Now we’ll gather all the data and see why I crashed today”. More, from a press release issued by Yamaha: Yamaha World Supersport rider Cal Crutchlow was unstoppable today as he took an incredible fifth race win of the season at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany. Starting from pole, Crutchlow led the race from the off, laying down fast lap after fast lap, leaving the competition with nothing to do but fight amongst themselves. Such was his pace that midway through the race the British rider had almost a ten second lead on his closest rival, a gap which increased to just over ten seconds by the chequered flag. Team mate Fabien Foret worked hard from a less than ideal grid start position, gaining six positions to take fifth by just past mid race. With the gap to fourth too far to bridge by this point the French rider held on to take well earned points away with him. Crutchlow now heads to Imola in two weeks time with three races left on the calendar having extended his championship lead to 22 points over closest rival Eugene Laverty. Foret leaves Germany having moved up to fifth position, 29 points behind fourth placed rider Kenan Sofuoglu. Yamaha are also leading the manufacturer standings, four points ahead of Honda. Cal Crutchlow, Yamaha World Supersport Team (1st) “it was really good for me to come here to the Nurburgring, my team’s home circuit and win and prove I’ve still got the pace after Brno. We beat the field very well there and came here and did the same thing. It’s been a great weekend, the team have been brilliant and given me the bike to win on, I want to dedicate the win to my Aunt Rose.” Fabien Foret, Yamaha World Supersport Team (5th) “it could be worse, when you get some rain drops it’s not my ideal racing conditions. As soon as the rain stopped I pushed harder and I had a good pace. I tried to catch Roccoli but I was making a couple of mistakes with a couple of laps to go so held on for the end. I gained a place in the championship so we’ll see what happens at the next race.” Wilco Zeelenberg, Yamaha World Supersport Team Manager “It was a brilliant result for Cal here today. His pace has been unbelievable all weekend. It was really good to see how he kept his rhythm when the rain came down as well. Obviously after Brno we were a little nervous watching the last few laps but it was a fantastic result, we look forward to him continuing to ride like this all the way to Portimao. For Fabien to start in 11th position and finish fifth was good. After Brno it was shame not to see him higher but we know that when some rain falls it’s not the ideal riding conditions for him. It’s been great to take the win here at our home race for the team, we’re looking forward to getting to Imola and doing it again!”
