DUCATI MARLBORO TEAM BEGINS FINAL TEST OF 2007 WITH NEW GP8 The Ducati Marlboro Team commenced its final test session of the year at Jerez today, deploying the factory’s new Desmosedici GP8 in the hands of World Champion Casey Stoner and new team-mate Marco Melandri Conditions were warm and sunny, with temperatures around 22 degrees, allowing teams to make the most of this first day of a three-day session. Stoner was immediately very fast on the GP8, gaining a very positive impression of the new bike. The Australian went on to top the day’s lap times, despite a fall in the afternoon that left him unscathed. Melandri focused on chassis set-up, finding a good direction towards the end of the day. Casey Stoner, best lap 1m 40.221s (35 laps) “This first day with the GP8 was really positive for us. I immediately felt at home on the bike because it’s pretty similar to what we rode last season. Today we were quite a bit faster than we were when we raced here back in March, which is very important because we have improved at a track that used to be a bit difficult for us. We found a very good set-up which could also be good at other circuits. We used 2007 spec tyres today, tomorrow we will start with Bridgestone’s new tyres. The only bad moment of the day was the crash, but these things can happen. I’m okay though, so everything is fine.” Marco Melandri, best lap 1m 41.889s (62 laps) “We started working on chassis geometry to adapt the bike to my riding style. Today we made some good choices on settings and also some not so good choices, but every change teaches us something more about the bike which is very important. Towards the end of the day we found a set-up that I liked better, even though I don’t yet feel totally at ease. We have work to do and I’m not at all worried about that.” Today lap times 1. Stoner (Ducati Marlboro Team) 1’40.221 (35 laps) 2. Pedrosa (Honda) 1’40.355 (50) 3. Rossi (Yamaha) 1’40.514 (49) 4. Edwards (Yamaha) 1’40.790 (38) 5. Hayden (Honda) 1’40.923 (53) 6. The opening day of the three-day MotoGP test saw the Gresini Honda riders Shinya Nakano and Alex De Angelis take to the 4,423 km track as they step up preparations for 2008. After completing some familiarisation laps, Nakano focused on the balance of the bike and the set up before starting to concentrate on the race pace. It was a very positive test also for his team mate Alex De Angelis, at his debut on the Rc212V. The Italian rider improved his feeling with the bike lap after lap and at the end he scored the best time among the satellite riders. ALEX DE ANGELIS (6th, 1’41.111, 58 laps) : “I’m very satisfied of this first day. I was able to improve the feeling with the bike lap after lap. I’m starting to be quite confident and I have fun riding this bike. Today we worked on the set up of the bike and tested some solutions in order to improve the traction. At the end I scored my best time with a qualifying tyre. Tomorrow we will start testing some tyres “. SHINYA NAKANO (8th, 1’41.277, 65 laps): “It was a very positive start. We worked with method focusing firstly on the balance of the bike, then on the set up and finally we worked on the clutch. In total I completed 65 laps, using always race tyres. The feeling with the bike has improved during the day and I think tomorrow we will make a step forward working with Bridgestone technicians. According to the programme, in fact, we should test some new front tyres.” Lap times 1. Stoner (Ducati ) 1’40.221 2. Pedrosa (Honda) 1’40.355 ) 3. Rossi (Yamaha) 1’40.514 4. Okada (Honda) 1’43.051 More, from a press release issued by Repsol Honda: REPSOL HONDA BEGINS FINAL TEST OF 2007 The Repsol Honda Team embarked on its final three days of testing in 2007 at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain today. Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden continued to develop the new carbon-fibre clad RC212V – the 800cc machine the pair will contest in the 2008 MotoGP World Championship. Taking advantage of cool, sunny conditions at the famous Andalucian circuit, the factory Honda pairing began analysing the latest engine and chassis updates to the HRC prototype racer. They were joined on the 4.423km (2.747-mile) Jerez circuit by many of the other MotoGP teams today. Dani Pedrosa, who missed the last test in Sepang, Malaysia, was riding the 2008 RC212V for the first time since the day and a half of testing that followed the final round of the MotoGP season at Valencia at the beginning of November. The 22-year-old Spaniard was quickly up to speed at his home circuit and ended the day with the second fastest time – a lap of 1m 40.355s, which was well inside his fastest lap of 1m 41.014s, set during the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez in March. Nicky Hayden was back on board the RC212V just ten days after the Sepang test and he too was encouraged by the latest developments to this all-new machine. The 2006 World Champion completed 63 laps today and finished the day with the fifth fastest time. His lap of 1m 40.923s was also inside his fastest lap from the March race when he recorded a best time of 1m 41.441s. The test continues at Jerez for two more days. Dani Pedrosa Fastest lap: 1m 40.355s 60 laps “We’ve been testing with the new bike exclusively today and we were looking to see if the issues we had at the first test in Valencia have been solved. The electronic engine settings which control the power delivery and the engine braking have been improved which makes the machine more rideable and quicker too. The feeling from the chassis is quite good but I have to continue working on the settings to suit me. In Valencia the bike wasn’t ready to complete a lot of laps but today we have been able to do many more. There has been progress in some areas and in other areas we still have some work to do. We’ve tried some changes with the chassis today and we’ll look for further improvements tomorrow. So far we haven’t tested any new tyres and this is an important area to improve lap times, so I’m confident we can make further progress throughout this test.” Nicky Hayden Fastest lap: 1m 40.923s 63 laps “Overall it was a pretty positive day. We tried some modifications to the engine to get it running better than it did at the previous two tests and now it seems to be more responsive and to be running a little better – though it’s still not quite there. We also changed a few things on the chassis, for instance the offset, which took a while and reduced our track time somewhat, but this was important to try to understand more about the machine. This is the first time I’ve been able to come into the garage, focus on the 2008 machine and spend the whole day on it so that was beneficial. It wasn’t a perfect start to the test – that’s pretty rare – but we definitely learned some useful things and I’m encouraged by the start we’ve made here today. Let’s see what happens over the next few days and aim to make some more improvements.” More, from a press release issued by Fiat Yamaha: LORENZO’S THIRD YAMAHA TEST GETS UNDERWAY IN JEREZ Lorenzo began his third test with Yamaha today, his final test before he becomes an official Fiat Yamaha Team rider in January. Having tested recently in Malaysia, the 20-year-old Spaniard finds himself a little closer to home this time and in somewhat cooler temperatures, at the Andalucian circuit of Jerez. Lorenzo and his team picked up from where they left off in Sepang, continuing to work on general set-up as the 250cc World Champion becomes better adapted to the demands of an 800cc MotoGP bike and his new Michelin tyres. Lorenzo’s aim for this test is to get as many kilometres under his belt as possible and he started well today, completing 91 laps and setting the seventh best time of 1’41.230. The best time of the day was set by Casey Stoner, with a lap of 1’40.221 while Lorenzo’s 2008 team-mate Valentino Rossi was third with a time of 1’40.514. Jorge Lorenzo (7th, 1’41.230, 91 laps) “Today I felt much better on the bike than I did in Sepang. I feel more comfortable with the bike every time I ride it and for sure it feels more like a part of me now. I am really looking forward to improving again tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Today I rode 91 laps, so I really made the most of the day, and I will continue to work tomorrow to improve again. The more kilometres I ride, the better it is for me and for my team, and I want to give them all the information I can in order to improve as much as we can over these winter tests.” Daniele Romagnoli Team Manager “Today with Jorge we confirmed the set-up we found in Sepang and we also confirmed the new bike geometry we tested there. This helps us to check that we are working in the correct direction. Today we also found a new riding position for Jorge; we put a new spacer on the tank and it seems to work perfectly. He feels better and better on the bike all the time. He rode 91 laps, which is a huge effort, both from him and from our staff members (who I want to thank!) He kept a high level of concentration throughout the whole day, and he was therefore able to give us the maximum in terms of information, feeling and comment. Tomorrow we will work on the set-up again and hopefully we will be able to confirm today’s modifications.” Lap Times 1. Casey Stoner (Ducati) 1’40.221 2. Dani Pedrosa (Honda) 1’40.355 3. Vittoriano Guareschi (Ducati) 1.44.588 More, from a press release issued by JiR Team Scot: Dovizioso and JiR Team Scot head back to Europe for Jerez tests MotoGP debutante Andrea Dovizioso and his JiR Team Scot squad are back in Europe for the latest round of the post season winter tests in the run-up to the 2008 MotoGP championship. Following on from an impressive showing in Sepang ten days ago, the 2007 250cc runner-up spent this first day getting used to riding the 2007 RC212V MotoGP bike around the 2.748 mile (4.423km) Jerez track. The 2004 125cc World Champion will now continue the hard work tomorrow when he begins an exhaustive series of tyre tests for Michelin and begins to make changes to the chassis of his Honda in a bid to find the perfect set-up for the Spanish track. Cirano Mularoni Team Manager, JiR Team Scot “We have had a good day today although it was a steady start. Andrea today had to get used to the Jerez circuit on the four-stroke MotoGP bike so that was our main aim. He still is getting used to this bike and at every track we go to it’s a new experience for him. Tomorrow our work continues and we will be making more changes and Michelin will be giving us more tyres to test, so we are hoping that the good weather continues.” Andrea Dovizioso Rider, JiR Team Scot MotoGP – Best time: 1′ 42.033″, total laps: 60 “It has been not so bad today. Once more I’m getting more used to the bike although the problem here at Jerez is that I don’t like the circuit so much, so it’s been difficult to go fast from the first lap! Despite that I think the lap time was not so bad so we are not worried as we will get faster the more we learn the circuit with this bike. As it was my first time out on the MotoGP bike here we didn’t make so many changes today but a few things on the electronics to make it suit the circuit. Sepang is so different and Jerez is a much smaller circuit, so the electronics are set-up to stop the rear wheel spinning so much. Today I still had some problems adjusting to the engine braking so we need to improve that point. Tomorrow we will work hard with Michelin and test some tyres, as today was spent simply learning the circuit. I would also like to make some changes to the brakes as you use them a lot here at Jerez.” Gianni Berti – Technical Coordinator, JiR Team Scot MotoGP “Even on the 250 Andrea has had difficulties with this track, I think it’s fair to say he’s not a big fan of Jerez! Despite that we have to get on with the job of getting Andrea used to the bike on this track. Here we made some small modifications to the chassis and electronic set-up just to make the bike easier to ride around here so he can get used to the characteristics of the bike on the Jerez circuit. Today was a build-up to the final two days of the test while Andrea got used to the RC212V. Tomorrow we will step things up with some more tyres to test from our partners at Michelin, so we will have another busy day.” MotoGP Jerez day one test times 1) Casey Stoner Ducati 1′ 40.221″ 2) Dani Pedrosa Honda 1′ 40.355″ 3) Valentino Rossi Yamaha 1′ 40.514″ 4) Colin Edwards Yamaha 1′ 40.790″ 5) Nicky Hayden Honda 1′ 40.923″ 13) Andrea Dovizioso Honda 1′ 42.033″ More, from a press release issued by Fiat Yamaha: ROSSI COMPLETES FIRST DAY OF TESTING WITH BRIDGESTONE Valentino Rossi, back in action for the first time since breaking his hand in Valencia, tested his Yamaha M1 on Bridgestone tyres for the first time today at the Spanish circuit of Jerez. The three-day test is the final test of 2007 and Rossi was joined in the garage by his new 2008 team-mate, Jorge Lorenzo, as well as the majority of the MotoGP paddock. Rossi, his team and his engineers used today as a chance to get to know the Bridgestone technicians, whom they will be working with next season, and to understand the initial adjustments they need to make to the bike to suit the new tyres. Rossi’s comments were positive and, having started testing at midday on a sunny but cold day in Jerez, he completed 49 laps. Despite still suffering from some pain in his hand, the Italian’s best time of 1’40.514 was good enough for third and was just 0.293 seconds off Casey Stoner, who topped the time sheets. Rossi’s new 2008 team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was seventh in a time of 1’41.230 Valentino Rossi (3rd, 1’40.514, 49 laps) “My first comment about the tyres is positive, and this has definitely been a positive day for us in terms of times and my feeling with the bike. My pace was not bad at all, even though my hand is still hurting, especially in braking. Let’s say that I am at 90% fitness! I am happy with the choice I have made and I have great motivation for the task. Today it was also clear that there is a very high level of concentration from all the team members and this gives me even higher motivation, if possible. We have two more days, so it is not time for a final comment, but I am happy with the first day. Furthermore Furusawa-san is here, and this gives an idea of Yamaha’s commitment to improve and to return to the top. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow and let’s hope it can be even better than it was today.” Davide Brivio Team Manager “Today was the day we have all been waiting for. It has been a very important day for us, because we’ve been looking forward to having the chance to confirm our decision. We also wanted to check Valentino’s physical condition after the crash in Valencia. At the beginning of the test he suffered a bit, but he went better as the day went on, even if we know he is not at 100% yet. As far as the new work with Bridgestone is concerned, we made a good start. Today we used all the time to get to know each other and to allow our engineers to interact with their technicians. We also worked to understand what kind of modifications we need to make to the bike, in order to make it work properly with the new tyres. Technically, of course, we have concentrated entirely on tyres and on understanding Valentino’s initial comments about them. It was a good day with good times and we look forward to continuing the work tomorrow and on Thursday.” Lap Times 1. Casey Stoner (Ducati) 1’40.221 2. Dani Pedrosa (Honda) 1’40.355 3. Vittoriano Guareschi (Ducati) 1.44.588 More, from a press release issued by Honda: Pedrosa fastest Honda as final test of 2007 begins. Six Honda RC212Vs were lapping the Jerez circuit in southern Spain today as the MotoGP teams assembled for the final time this year to resume preparations for the fast-approaching 2008 season. Dani Pedrosa in second place was the fastest of the Honda riders as he once again got to grips with his brand new prototype RC212V, the Spaniard making the most of cool but sunny conditions to complete 60 laps. With ambient and track temperatures slowly rising to 20 degrees the riders waited until 11.30am before venturing out onto the famous circuit. Steadily improving his pace throughout the day, Pedrosa finished just 0.134s behind the Ducati of Casey Stoner, who walked away from a high-speed fall in the afternoon. Pedrosa’s American Repsol Honda team-mate wasn’t far behind in fifth as he also took advantage of the updates made to his prototype machine since the last test in Sepang, Malaysia which finished ten days ago. Directly behind Hayden came the Honda Gresini of Alex de Angelis who continued his promising adaptation to MotoGP’s demands, setting the sixth fastest time using a qualifying Bridgestone tyre on his 2007-spec RC212V. Team-mate Shinya Nakano finished the day in eighth place and was happy with the steady progress of the team. Randy de Puniet aboard the 2007-spec LCR Honda recorded the ninth fastest time as he spent the day working to improve the rear grip of his RC212V and declared himself confident that the two remaining days of the test would bear further fruit. JiR Team Scot’s MotoGP impressive novice, Andrea Dovizioso, spent the day familiarizing himself with the demands of a MotoGP machine at the Spanish circuit, finishing in thirteenth overall on his 2007 RC212V, and satisfied that there are further improvements in speed to come. Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 1m 40.355s 60 laps “We’ve been testing with the new bike exclusively today and we were looking to see if the issues we had at the first test in Valencia have been solved. We worked on set-up without making major changes so that I can grow in confidence. In general I’m satisfied with how things are going and we’re taking small steps at this stage to improve rear traction and reduce the front chattering. Tomorrow we’ll continue the set-up work and will test some new front tyres.” Shinya Nakano, Honda Gresini: 1m 41.277s – 65 laps “I was happy with our first day here today. First of all we concentrated on achieving the right machine balance and weight transfer for this track. After this we worked on the general chassis set-up and tried to adjust the settings of the slipper clutch to improve feeling under deceleration. I’m pretty happy at the moment because the feeling from the machine is improving each time I go out so we’re making progress. We didn’t test tyres today and tomorrow we should get the chance to try a new front tyre from Bridgestone.” Randy de Puniet, LCR Honda, 1m 41.313s – 79 laps “This was my first day at Jerez riding the Honda and riding on Michelin tyres and I think the day went OK considering this. We’ve experienced some difficultly finding enough grip at the rear of the machine and this is the main thing that prevented us from going even faster today. Apart from this the feeling from the machine is pretty good and if we can make some progress in this area I should be happy. I gave my maximum today which is what you need to do to find the best set-up and improve the machine. I’m looking forward to more of the same tomorrow.” Andrea Dovizioso, JiR Team Scot, 1m 42.033s – 60 laps “The test has started well and the lap time is not too bad for my first visit to this circuit on a MotoGP bike. The machine is not yet at 100 per cent performance and we need to make some adjustments to the settings to suit this track which is very different from Sepang where we last tested. I need to improve my lap times by more than one second but I’m not worried. The main area to improve is still the stability of the machine under braking in a straight line and we’ll continue to work on this over the next two days. I’m happy with the start we’ve made today.” More, from a press release issued by Repsol Media Service: THE REPSOL HONDA TEAM CONTINUES TO DEVELOP THE HONDA RC212V 2008 Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden have been testing the latest improvements at Jerez before the winter break begins Three weeks after the World Championship finished the Repsol Honda Team was back to work preparing the motorbike that will be used next season by Nicky Hayden and Dani Pedrosa in their fight for the MotoGP title. If the Repsol riders had their first contact with the bike some time ago and in Sepang Nicky Hayden continued to get used to the Honda RC212V 2008, this time the Circuito de Jerez was the setting for what will be the final session this year. Last week the rain at this very circuit conditioned the 125cc and 250cc teams but today the day broke with the skies a clear blue, and although it was cold first thing, when the sun had heated the asphalt enough the riders got out on the track in Andalusia and had a positive day`s training. Dani Pedrosa did 60 laps and set a best time of 1’40.355 seconds, second behind Casey Stoner who stopped the clock at 1’40.221. The Repsol rider was able to check out the improvements that HRC had been able to make over the last few weeks since the riders made their conclusions in Valencia, especially with regard to the electronic engine brake. What is more, Pedrosa was able to try some variations on the chassis set up; however the Repsol Honda Team rider found that in some aspects it will have to be improved even more. Referring to his teammate Nicky Hayden, the day was also positive. After doing 63 laps the Repsol rider set the fifth best time, stopping the clock at 1’40.923 seconds. The American made some more changes and did more tests to try an improve the all-round performance. Like Pedrosa he rode the whole day on his new machine; after this first day`s training Hayden was very pleased at the end of the day. Work at the Circuito de Jerez will continue tomorrow and Thursday, two important days to make some conclusions that will let HRC make some improvements during the months that training is not allowed. So the riders aim to take advantage of the two days that are left to work on tyre development. Quotes MotoGP Nicky Hayden, 1’40.923 secs, 63 laps, 279 Km. “Overall it was a pretty positive day.
