Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich underwent surgery Thursday night at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Dr. Kevin Grassner used two pins and wire to set the fractured second metacarpal in Ulrich’s left hand. The procedure took one hour. Ulrich suffered the injury in a crash during a wet session of promoter practice Thursday at Road America. According to Ulrich, he was going through Turn Seven when it suddenly started raining harder, he lost traction abruptly and highsided spectacularly. Before he crashed, Ulrich had already gone faster than when he qualified on the Superstock pole position during wet qualifying last year at Road America. Ulrich also suffered a fractured left thumb and an injury to the middle finger on his left hand that left the bone exposed on the palm side. Ulrich did not participate in Friday morning’s Superstock practice session, but it has not yet been decided if he will or will not attempt to ride this weekend. With Santiago Villa out for the remainder of the 2008 season with a broken femur and hip and Ulrich’s participation questionable for the Road America weekend, Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki has decided to put Michael Barnes on one of its Superstock GSX-R1000s to “fly the flag.” Barnes is also racing a Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600 this weekend. Update: Ulrich has announced that he will not attempt to ride in this weekend’s AMA event at Road America. “When Dr. Ting tells you not to race, you listen,” Ulrich said at lunchtime Friday.
