Garrett Willis Secures Third 2008 WERA Championship with a Win, Ends 2008 Season with Five #1 Plates After a season filled with ups and downs the Willis family headed to Las Vegas with hopes of achieving one more success together in what is likely to be Garrett’s last race as an amateur. The sole focus for the final round of 2008 WERA West competition was the B Superstock Expert 750 class which he only needed a 15th or better finish in to secure the championship. Starting from the front row Garrett put his starting prowess to work and led the race from start to finish and ended up with a sizable gap on the field without having to push his Honda CBR600RR to the limit. The win more than secured his third 2008 WERA Class Championship after bringing home the C Superbike Expert and B Superstock Expert Championships at the penultimate round. His only disappointment for the weekend was that his competition for the class title chose not to race with him even though he was in attendance at the event. The three WERA West Championships added to the two AFM (600 Superbike and 600 Production) Championships bring Garrett’s season total to five #1 plates and represent the culmination of a lot work and dedication by Garrett, his family and the sponsors that made it all possible for him to go after his dream. In a sincere show of gratitude Garrett said “I really want to dedicate my season to my family who has supported me every step of the way. I know they’ve had to sacrifice to put my racing first, but together we’ve enjoyed some of the best times a family could have and the tough times have brought us even closer together. My sponsors are also some great people who have a lot of faith in me and made sure I had the tools I needed to succeed and I want to thank them for that and remind them that we’re not done yet and together I hope we can achieve even more in the future.” This year has shown the young rider can be fast, fall down and get back up and still go fast as well as handle adversity and challenges with a maturity beyond his years. If things work out according to plan Garrett should be moving to the professional ranks in 2009 and hopes to continue riding hard to make his dreams come true.
