Gobert sixth in solid return to Queensland Raceway Gobert Motorsports team rider Aaron Gobert finished a solid sixth overall at Queensland Raceway’s fourth round of the 2010 InsureMyRide Australian Supersport Championship on 20-22 August, moving into the top five overall in the series. The former AMA Superstock 1000 Champion qualified ninth during Saturday’s qualifying while continuing to develop the team’s Yamaha-supported YZF-R6, before racing to seventh in the first 16-lap race of the weekend on Sunday. Race two was another step forward for Gobert as he worked his way through the field to fifth place at the race’s end, securing sixth position overall for the round and boosting himself to fifth position in the championship. “We had worked on the bike development a lot in the lead-up to Queensland Raceway and the rain on Friday meant we missed out on a lot of track time, so we had to work hard on the set-up on Saturday,” Sydney-based Gobert explained. “By Sunday it all felt comfortable and we had good race pace, however qualifying on the third row made it a lot more difficult to work toward the front guys. Overall it’s another improvement though and I’m looking forward to the next round at Phillip Island next month.” The round was won by Yamaha Racing Team factory rider Kevin Curtain, with Gobert securing a place on the Privateer Cup podium for the round. Gobert now sits fifth in the championship on 98 points, looking to improve upon that result as the season enters its penultimate round of 2010 alongside the L&H 500 V8 Supercars Championship Series event at Phillip Island on 10-12 September. The round marked the final weekend of competition for talented 16-year-old Nick Waters in the Superstock 600 category, securing fourth in the championship after what has been a consistent rookie season on his Suzuki GSX-R600. Nick qualified on the front row of the grid and then raced to five fourth place results before rounding out his weekend with a podium finish in third position in race six, capping off an impressive maiden season in the development category. “It was good to get on the front row for the first time this year in qualifying and then also to finish on the podium in the final race of the season on Sunday afternoon,” he commented. “I’m really happy with how the Suzuki GSX-R600 has performed all season and would like to thank the following people who have supported me Rod and Tracy from Sunstate Racing, Phil and Hayden from Team Suzuki. “I’d also like to thank my mechanic David Malins, Glen Willing and Glenn Granger for keeping the bike on the track in top condition, plus my brothers Josh and Brodie for always giving me advice. Finally, also thanks to my mum and dad for all their support for the season. It’s been a fun first year on the bigger bike.” Older brother Brodie suffered a frustrating weekend in the Supersport category onboard his Sunstate Racing-supported Suzuki GSX-R600, finishing 11th overall after qualifying 16th on the grid when technical difficulties struck the team on Saturday. Brodie, who recently won the prestigious Suzuka 4 Hours in Japan, bounced back to finish with a pair of hard-fought 11th place finishes on Sunday, finishing off the overall podium for the first time this season. The result bumped 18-year-old Brodie back to third in the series standings, however he remains in with a chance at claiming the title with just two rounds left to be contested. “In the first qualifying session we had brake problems with the bike and then I struggled in the second session later that afternoon,” he reflected. “In the races I was starting too far back and just didn’t have the race pace to run with the front guys, but I’m confident we can get back to where we need to be to finish up the season. “I need to put my head down and sort out the problems that I’ve got, and I’ll really be trying hard to win some races at Phillip Island so I can put myself back in the hunt for the championship.” The next round of the Supersport championship will be contested alongside the V8 Supercars Championship Series’ L&H 500 at Phillip Island on 10-12 September. Ryan Dymond 158pts More, from a press release issued by Racing for a Wish: RAIN CRASH FOLLOWED WITH PODIUM Signorelli Falls in the Surprise Rain, Finishes with Podium Racing for a Wish and rider Gerry Signorelli raced at Portland International Raceway for the USGPRU West Round #5 on August 21st and 22nd. Recently repaved, PIR offered a simple layout for Signorelli to learn quickly onboard the Bob Fier Racing Moriwaki MD250H. Action started with the Moto3 class where Signorelli qualified fourth on the grid. Half way through the race, rain began to fall on some portions of the track. Unfortunately, Signorelli crashed out of the last corner on lap 10. The corner had become more soaked with rain since the lap before and he made the mistake of trying to carry the same amount of corner speed that he had on the prior lap. Luckily, Gerry and the Moriwaki slid off track without any great damage and the team repaired the bike enough to run in the GP125 class. The GP125 race started wet but was quickly drying. Signorelli went out on slicks and hoped that as the track dried, they would prove to be the right choice. His start to the race was slow as checked traction and made sure everything on the bike was working properly after the crash in the race before. As the race went on, Gerry picked up the pace and claimed second place on the podium. “This weekend was dramatic at times. The Bob Fier Racing Moriwaki is an incredible bike, but we have kept it stock which means we are down on power and a bit heavier than the competition”, states Gerry. “That made our work hard this weekend here at PIR where the track consists mainly of a couple big straights connected by just a few turns. Regardless, these talented kids keep me honest and force me to ride very hard to compete! In the first race, some of the corners were dry, while others got quite wet. I made the mistake of charging into the last corner as hard on lap 10 as I had the previous lap, but a lot more rain had fallen. When I cracked open the throttle at mid corner I lost the rear. I was very disappointed in myself, but am happy we were able to come away with some success on the weekend. I can’t thank Bob Fier Racing enough for putting together this USGPRU season! Its been great and we have two more rounds.” Racing for a Wish is a motorcycle road racing program that benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation as it supports Gerry Signorelli’s development towards becoming an internationally competitive racer. More, from a press release issued by Evan Steel Performance: Tony Kasper breaks Robert Jensen’s lap record at B.I.R.! Tony Kasper took his 24/7 Speed Co. supported Yamaha R-6 to six race victories during the CRA race weekend as well as broke Rob Jensens 600cc lap record. The weekend started out running Dunlop Dot’s, from On Track For Him, and Tony winning two races on Saturday, Middleweight Supersport and Heavyweight Supersport. Tony and Jason Bryant worked on getting the Speedcell sponsored R-6 working with the D211GP’s as the last race weekend had been an AMA event and the bike was set up for Mid-Ohio and Dunlop GPA’s. By the end of Saturday the team had two race victories, and was less than one second off of the lap record. Sunday morning the team switched to Dunlops ultra sticky 17” slicks and was feeling confident, but the added rear grip caused an unforeseen front end push. After some last minute set-up changes, Tony started his first race of the day with an untested bike set-up, and rode it to victory, as well as within a few thousandths of the 600cc lap record! For the second race of the day, with a few minor tweaks to the suspension between races, Tony pulled away to a convincing victory, and a new CRA 600cc lap record of 1:36.575. The team won the rest of their races Sunday, for a total of six on the weekend. Tony Kasper: “I really want to thank all the great people who have been helping me out this year, especially Jason Bryant from 24/7 Speed Co., Josh Kaufman from Speedcell, Jim from On Track For Him, Rick at Hart & Huntington, the crew at ESP, and my Dad who is always helping me at the track. It was a season goal of mine to break this record and it feels great to have accomplished that!” Jason Bryant: “After struggling with some set-up issues on Saturday and again Sunday morning we used our best compound tire too early but Tony was able to show us how talented he is by putting down the new short course 600cc lap record on a less than ideal tire choice. Nice work!” For more info, check out www.tonykasper.com Sponsors: ESP, 24/7 Speed Co., Speedcell, Dunlop, On Track For Him, Hart & Huntington, Bull Frog Sweatshop, SPY, Yamaha, Heinens, Blown Concepts, Puma, Hindle, The Zins Chiropractic Clinic, Woodcraft, Armour Bodies, SBS, Phiten Racing. More, from a press release issued by Damian Cudlin’s publicist: CUDLIN CLOSES IN ON FIRST IDM TITLE Damian Cudlin is inching closer and closer to his first IDM Championship title in what has been an amazing breakthrough season so far for the relentless Aussie battler. After a sensational Grand Prix debut at Sachsenring, where he finished an impressive 7th, Cudlin resumed his IDM Supersport duties at Schleiz in Germany and proceeded to dominate the event, claiming pole position, a new lap record and a convincing race win. Extending his championship advantage to 20 points with 3 races remaining, Cudlin headed directly to Assen for the Dutch Championship race which he and his MRC Team used as a test for the penultimate IDM round just 2 weeks later. Cudlin claimed another victory in the 14 lap race, placing him in a strong position as the IDM returned to the historic Assen venue. After encountering various problems during the IDM weekend, Cudlin rode a calculating race to finish a close 3rd behind local ace Raymond Schouten and Michi Ranseder. Losing just 4 points to his nearest championship rival Ranseder, Cudlin now holds a healthy 16 point advantage with just 2 races remaining at the IDM finale in Hockenheim. “Things have been going pretty well for us lately and I feel like I’m on a bit of a roll now.” Cudlin explained from his ‘home on the road’ mobile caravan. “The Grand Prix in Sachsenring was a great experience and the buzz from that weekend carried onto Schleiz which really put us in charge of the championship standings again. The Dutch Championship weekend went well at Assen but the IDM event was a bit of a battle for various reasons. Luckily we didn’t sacrifice many points to Ranseder and with 2 races remaining we are still in very good shape for the title.” While riding in the World Endurance Championship as well this year, Cudlin also squeezed the Suzuka 8 hours race into his schedule for GMT Yamaha, and made a debut testing appearance on the official BMP Elf 99 BMW at Magny Cours in France. Although the Suzuka 8 hour race was short lived for the French GMT crew, with a damaged engine dropping them out of an early 8th place, the pace of the #99 BMW at Magny Cours had most teams sweating, as all remain in anticipation of the Bold’or 24 hour race in 3 weeks time. “My schedule has been pretty mental lately to be honest. I’ve only spent 4 days in my apartment in the last 5 weeks, but it’s all paying off and hopefully soon we’ll have something to celebrate. My main focus now is winning the IDM championship, finishing the season strongly in World Endurance, and securing myself a ride for 2011. Once that’s all sorted I think I’ll enjoy a bit of a break back home in Australia with the mrs!” Cudlin added. The Bold’or 24 hour will be held on the 11/12th of September followed by the IDM Finale at Hockenheim a week later on the 18/19th of September. More, from a press release issued by Race Tire Services/Dunlop: Villa Breaks Middleweight Track Record on Dunlop D211 Tires Santiago Villa rode a flawless race in middleweight GTU and broke the 600cc track record at the CCS Florida Regional event August 22 in Jupiter, Florida. Villa competing on his Prieto Racing Suzuki GSX-R600 with Dunlop D211 Tires turned a blistering 1:17.647 on lap 5 of 9. “I had the tires holding me to the ground and they stuck like glue. Prieto Racing had a fast bike for me and the Dunlop tires kept the horsepower to the ground”, said Santiago Villa after the race. “It was my tires that made the difference”. Santiago Villa is currently leading the points in the CCS Florida Region, with Sean Dwyer and Charlie Mavros filling in the top 3 overall spots and all on Dunlop tires. Villa was the Florida #1 plate holder for 2007. “With the level of competition we see here in Florida, it’s no wonder these records are falling”, said Henry DeGouw, race director of the CCS/Florida Region, after he confirmed the record breaking run. ” I am proud of our riders in Florida and all over the nation. Competition breeds better riders, better laps time and better tires. That’s what I love about racing”, said Steve Brubaker President of Race Tire Service Inc.
