Morgan Broadhead’s recovery continues, with the injured former AMA Road Racing Manager now handling press relations for the WERA National Endurance Championship-winning Vesrah Suzuki team. “I’m doing really well,” Broadhead said in a telephone interview with Roadracing World this morning. “I have kinda got myself up and running again. I am going to slowly work my way back into the industry. I know Mark (Junge at Vesrah) really well, and I thought that would be a good way to get back into it. I’m going to go to some races and work my way back into the industry. “Physically, I’m doing very well. I have full mobility. Mentally, it’s good, actually. I’m not going to say I’m 100 percent, but as far as day-to-day activities, I’m there. I still need to take it a little easier than I was until I get myself back up to speed.” Broadhead suffered a closed head injury and a broken forearm and wrist when he crashed his GSX-R750 in qualifying for a WERA/AMA National Challenge Series event at Jennings GP in Florida last September. Doctors put Broadhead into an induced coma for nearly four weeks while his brain recovered from the injury. “I remember going through the period when my mind was coming back to me you don’t want to go through that,” Broadhead says. “I couldn’t think things through. It was like, if a car was heading toward me, all I could think was, ‘There’s a car heading toward me.’ It was just the immediate, cold facts. I couldn’t think through to the idea that I could get hurt by the car, or that I’d better get out of the car’s way. It’s tremendous to realize what you think normally, when thinking is normal.” Broadhead is no longer associated with the AMA, and is slowly feeling his way back into the field. He is hoping to attend the AMA Superbike round at Fontana. “It’s just awesome to feel like I can start working, to be involved a little bit again,” he says. “And trust me, after the first couple weeks after coming to, it’s good to want to feel involved.” Broadhead wanted to thank those who have supported him and his family through his recovery. After his insurance company refused to pay to transport him back to his home, the racing community raised the money necessary to fly him to a hospital near his Utah home. “The industry as a whole has been awesome,” Broadhead says. “I read through the pile of cards I got when I was in the hospital and I’m going, ‘I can’t believe I got cards from some of these people.’ It really helped my recovery because they showed me that all these people had a real interest in me. It really meant a lot to me. The AMA and WERA community have been awesome they’ve supported me, they’ve supported my family, and the Red Flag fund, they’ve been awesome.” Broadhead can be contacted via e-mail, at [email protected] . More, from the man himself: FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: Just wanted to address the web article quickly. Michael did an excellent job. The only down side is I was a little too positive in my comments to him and they made it into the story. We didn’t talk about the fact that I’m still on full disability and will be possibly for quite a while longer. I can move around, go the races, etc., but I’m still restricted in what I can and cannot do. A 12+ hour announcing day at the racetrack is not going to happen right now no matter how much I would like it to. I wouldn’t make it. Just don’t want any misconceptions out there! Anyway I wanted to straighten that out a little because this proves once again that your website works very well. You wouldn’t believe the number of e-mails I’ve gotten from it. It feels great but I am still not at full speed so I’ve got to take it at least a little easy. Thanks again. Morgan Broadhead Salt Lake City, Utah
