Joe Kopp, 45 More, from a press release issued by AMA Pro Racing: ELKHART LAKE, WI (June 5, 2011) – The 2011 Subway Doubleheader Weekend in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, marked the one-year anniversary of the inaugural AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 race, and the participants celebrated with style. At the start of Sunday’s race, it was Drag Specialties’ Michael Barnes leading the way in the nineteen-rider field. Michael Beck (J&P Cycles) was just off Barnes’ rear wheel, followed by Steve Rapp (Parts Unlimited) and series points-leader and pole-sitter Chris Fillmore (Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing). The true star of the seven-lap race, however, turned out to be the Road America draft, which resulted in more lead changes than you could shake a proverbial stick at. Almost immediately, a nine-rider pack broke off and began spinning out a gap. Passing and re-passing each other as often as three and four times per lap, the group swapped positions constantly, all four of the above mentioned front-runners taking multiple turns in the lead on their respective Harley-Davidson XR1200s. Defending series champion Danny Eslick (RMR Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing) and Wforacingonline.com’s Shawn Higbee soon joined the fray, and did Harv’s Harley-Davidson’s Travis Wyman. The stage was set for the final three laps. The front-runners continued to shuffle and reshuffle themselves, Eslick diving into Turn 5 and taking the lead, only to relinquish it coming out of Canada Corner. Wyman took over the top spot, only to give it up to Fillmore. Finally, on the last lap, all four Harley-Davidson XR1200s roared down the front straight, and when the smoke cleared, Fillmore had taken the win with Eslick and Wyman in tow. Third-place Wyman was followed home by Barnes, Rapp, Higbee, Beck, Tyler O’Hara (GP Bike Parts), Kyle Wyman (Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing), and Michael Corbino (RMR Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing). Leaving Road America, Fillmore leads the overall AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Championship by 23 points over Rapp, 110 to 87. Wyman sits third with 63. Chris Fillmore, 1st: “I really want to win this championship and I knew it was important for me to get the win here… I tried to get a good jump, crossed my fingers and hoped nobody got by me on the start/finish — and it worked. I think the last lap was the only lap where nobody passed me on the front straight. It was tough out there with the draft, you never knew who was going to come by you. My strategy was to be the second or third guy on the way to the finish line, but it didn’t work out that way.” Danny Eslick, 2nd: “It definitely took me a few laps to get going today but once I got up there, I knew I could stay and make some good passes down into turn five,,, I knew I could get inside of those guys in five, but then generally somebody would pass me back in Canada Corner. Nobody wanted to lead coming out of the last corner… The draft was a huge part of the race today and Chris just outsmarted me on that one.” Travis Wyman, 3rd: “The XR race was crazy and I didn’t get the best start… But I have a great bike in the Harv’s Harley-Davidson XR1200, and so I just started picking them off one by one. About midway through the race, I was leading down the front straight but I knew I couldn’t hold it because all the bike’s are so similar and everybody is really competitive and people were passing each other all over the place.” For details results from today’s racing, visit http://results.amaproracing.com.
