After running lap record times in the morning warm-up sessions, Jeremy Toye rebounded from last month’s defeat and led every lap en route to the Toyota Gold Cup Unlimited Formula One win in the headlining Willow Springs Motorcycle Club race this weekend. In Sunday morning practice, Toye and Jeffrey Tigert, the winners of every Formula One race this season, both were under the 1:20.340 Formula One lap record set by Jake Zemke back in 2002. In the first session, Toye ran a best of 1:20.153, and lowered that to a stunning 1:20.071 in the second practice session; Tigert fired off an amazing 1:19.873, just off Josh Hayes’ Toyota 200 qualifying lap record of 1:19.732 set in 2003. But the race itself was anticlimactic, with Toye taking his Dunlop-shod, Lee’s Cycle Service-tuned Honda CBR1000RR to the lead immediately. Toye burned off a string of laps in the 1:20 second range, establishing a comfortable gap over AMA Superbike competitor “Aussie Dave” Anthony and his Suzuki GSX-R1000. Tigert started slowly on his Dunlop-shod, Cycle Mall/Catalyst Reaction-backed Honda CBR1000RR, crossing the line in third after the first lap, then passing Anthony on the fourth lap for second. But Tigert never was able to close the gap to Toye, and backed well off on the last two laps, leaving Toye to ease away to a 5.016-second win in the 12-lap, 30-mile sprint. Tigert had to settle for setting the fastest lap of the race, a 1:20.742. Anthony finished third, with defending overall champion Karl Lowry fourth on a Graves Motorsports-backed, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R1, followed by Reno Karimian and Mark Simon. Tigert won the Open Superbike and Open Modified Production races over Anthony, while Lowry took the 650 Superbike and Open Superstock wins. AMA regular Shawn Higbee won the Heavyweight Twins and Formula Twins Heavyweight races.
