(May 14, 2011) – Yamaha’s Josh Hayes continued his mastery of Infineon Raceway on Saturday, taking the victory in the 22-lap feature for AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike at the West Coast Moto Jam. It was Hayes’ third consecutive win on the 12-turn, 2.32-mile road course, and his fourth in five races in Sonoma. Tommy Hayden (Suzuki) took second, with Martin Cardenas (Suzuki) third in the AMA Pro Road Racing event. Hayes hopes to make it a sweep of the doubleheader weekend on Sunday. “That was hard work,” Hayes said. “Tommy rode a fantastic race but what can I say, this has been three years in a row to win a (SuperBike) race here and that’s fantastic. I said when I got here that we’ve set the bar pretty high, but I’m really glad we’re maintaining. We’ll come back tomorrow and hopefully make them wait another year before someone else wins.” Hayden, starting from the second position, took the lead at the start of the race, but it would be short-lived. Hayes, the pole-sitter, regained the top spot on lap 2 with an inside pass in Turn 9. It was a lead he would never relinquish en route to his 15th career SuperBike victory and his sixth overall win in Sonoma. “I knew it was going to come down to the end but he held on and unfortunately I used my tires too much to try and make up time in different spots,” Hayden said. “Overall, I feel good about the race; I’ve come a long way at this track.” Pole-sitter Jason DiSalvo (Ducati) took advantage of an early-race mishap by Jake Holden (Ducati) to take the victory in the 22-lap feature for Daytona SportBike. Holden went off course at Turn 4 on lap 5, enabling DiSalvo to build a sizable cushion. DiSalvo led wire-to-wire to post his first-ever feature win at Infineon Raceway. Holden held on for second while Danny Eslick (Suzuki), who won in 2010 in Sonoma, was third. “Jake (Holden) made a mistake and I was able to put it on cruise control and ride around a bit. But the next thing you know the gap to second was shrinking,” DiSalvo said. “Jake was pushing hard. I just put my head down to hold the gap. I’m glad to reward the team with a win at Infineon.” Benny Solis (Honda) took the checkers in the Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport 18-lap feature on Saturday, with Tomas Puerta second (Yamaha) and David Gaviria third (Yamaha). It was Solis’ first-career AMA Pro Road Race win and the first for Honda since June 6, 2009. Solis took the win by nearly nine seconds. “This is my first season and I’m on the only Honda and that motivated me,” Solis sad. “To take this win was pretty special for me.” In other racing action, Chris Fillmore took the win in the Vance & Hines X1200 Series 11-lap feature, while Steve Atlas (Formula GP, Brammo) and Kenyon Kluge (Formula 75, Volt) claimed victories in the TTXGP North American Championship main event. This marked the second consecutive event in Sonoma for the zero carbon, electric motorcycle series. Action returns on Sunday at Infineon Raceway with main events scheduled in Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport (12:30 p.m.), Daytona SportBike (1:30 p.m.) and National Guard SuperBike (2:45 p.m.). There will also be main events in Supermoto USA, Flat Track and AHRMA National Motocross. Gates open at 8 a.m. For more information, visit www.infineonraceway.com/ama. All times Pacific. More, from a press release issued by Team M4 Suzuki: CARDENAS EARNS HIS FIRST AMA PRO SUPERBIKE PODIUM FOR M4 SUZUKI IN A THRILLING FINISH M4 Suzuki’s sensational Martin Cardenas claimed his first career AMA Superbike podium finish today at Infineon Raceway. The reigning AMA Pro Daytona SportBike champion put his obvious talent on display on Saturday in Sonoma. After getting a less than an ideal start off the line, the Colombian pounced on three rivals in three successive laps entering the hard-braking Turn 9 hard, slotting himself into fourth position in short order. On lap 9 of 22 Cardenas moved through into third and spent the remainder of the contest fending off heavy pressure for the final spot on the podium. The dogfight came down to the final lap where the calculating Cardenas held kept his cool through heavy traffic and powered across the stripe just 0.068 seconds in front of his rival. Cardenas’ third-place result in just the third race of the ’11 season has quickly established the class newcomer among the Superbike elite. “At the beginning of the race, I didn’t make a good start and lost quite a few positions,” Cardenas explained. “I worked my way up and the pressure was on all the way to the end. Luckily, I was able to hold the position and end up on the podium.” Commenting on his rapid progress as a Superbike pilot, Martin said, “Since I rode the bike for the first time the team has worked very hard to try to adjust the bike to my riding style. Also, I have tried to change some of the things in the way I ride because you have to ride these bikes a little bit differently than a 600. It’s been good. Every time that I get on the bike I get a little more comfortable. At the Miller test we figured something out that is working really good and it’s helped me to go a little bit faster. I tried the maximum I could in today’s race and got on the podium. I must thank to the team for their support.” Chris Ulrich made it two M4 Suzukis in the Superbike top ten on Saturday, guiding his GSX-R1000 to a tenth-place finish. The M4 Suzuki Daytona SportBike contenders had a tougher go on Saturday. Dane Westby’s challenge evaporated before it ever really took shape as his machine limped off the line at the green light with a clutch issue. He immediately retreated to pit lane before returning to the race a lap down on his spare bike. He was ultimately credited in 24th position. “I was being real aggressive on the clutch,” said Westby. “I guess I left it at the point of friction too long and that’s what did it. We’re looking forward to racing again tomorrow. I was so ready to ride that it was my fault.” Earlier in the weekend, Westby and the team took the initiative to meet with Josh Herrin and his squad after the last-lap crash at Daytona. Any differences were patched over and everyone has agreed to move forward. After showing promising pace on Friday, Santiago Villa crashed from 12th position a handful of laps into the contest. He finished in 22nd position. M4 Suzuki will return to Infineon Raceway on Sunday for the second half of the weekend doubleheader. More, from a press release issued by AMA Pro Racing: SONOMA, CA (March 14, 2011) – Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes got some measure of revenge for going winless at AMA Pro Road Racing’s opening 2011 round today, holding off a determined Tommy Hayden for the majority of the 22-lap AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike Race 1 at Infineon Raceway. While Hayden stalked Hayes at the front, Hayden’s Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate, Blake Young, put increasing pressure on Team M4 Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas, who ultimately held off Young to take the first National Guard SuperBike podium of his career. Cardenas’ third-place finish was extra impressive in light of the fact that today’s event was only the second SuperBike event the reining AMA Pro Daytona SportBike champ has contended. And while some predicted the Colombian rider would take time to settle into his new class, Cardenas has clearly demonstrated he’s not impressed by learning curves. It was Hayden who took the holeshot off the line, but he came immediately under attack from Hayes, who in turn had Young all over his back wheel. Young even claimed second briefly, sliding under when Hayes went wide, but Hayes almost immediately sandwiched himself back between the two Suzuki riders and took over the lead within a handful of laps. Jordan Suzuki’s Ben Bostrom, meanwhile, was looking stronger than he had through practice and qualifying, hanging with the then-top three and keeping a pile of riders behind him. That pile soon ceased to include Cardenas, who worked his way past Steve Rapp, then Bostrom, to set out after Young. Bostrom remained in contention, however, until he was relegated to the side of the track with a sprung chain with fewer than ten laps to go. Bostrom’s teammate, National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Roger Hayden, was holding steady in eighth when he was knocked out of the contest by ADR Fly Racing’s David Anthony in Turn 11 after Anthony slid into his rear wheel, splaying Hayden onto the sidelines. Hayden wasn’t able to reenter. Cardenas, meanwhile, had kept up the pressure on Young and taken advantage of a mistake that sent Young way wide to slide under and take over third position. From there, the name of Martin’s game was defense, as Young stuck to his rear wheel, clearly planning a late-race attack. While Young stalked Cardenas, Young’s teammate, Hayden, put increasing pressure on race-leader Hayes and beginning to whittle away at Hayes’ small lead. Hayes, however, had no intention of being caught, laying down the quickest lap the race had seen thus far late in the contest and even managing to extend it by race’s end, crossing the finish significantly ahead of Hayden, while Cardenas survived a last-lap, last-corner attack from Young to take third by .068. More, from a press release issued by Team Iron Horse BMW/ESP: Team Iron Horse BMW/ESP (Tucson, AZ) Secures BMW’s S1000RR Highest Finish in AMA Pro National Guard Superbike in Race One at Infineon Chris Peris of Team Iron Horse BMW/ESP (Tucson, AZ) lined up on the third row in ninth place for race one at Infineon. It was not the position the team was hoping for, but they were methodically working through different set-ups for the tight, technical track in Sears Point. Unlike the wide open, high horsepower tracks, Infineon presents special challenges for the new S1000RR. Team Iron Horse BMW with Evan Steel Performance (ESP) made the bike work for the track and finished with BMW’s top finish in an AMA Pro National Guard Superbike race to date on the S1000RR. Not only did the team to come from behind, but they were the only privateer team in the top five. That makes the result even sweeter. Evan Steel – Crew Chief: “I am again so happy to be involved with this team, we have an unbelievably dedicated and talented group this year! Everyone worked so hard, and stayed focused throughout practice and qualifying. We now have a very consistent bike which is comfortable for Chris to ride hard, as well as easy on the tires, so it made for a solid race result. Now that we are achieving good consistency over race distance, we need to find some more raw speed to get up in the battle for podium positions. However, if we keep working in the manner we have been this year, I believe we can get there soon.” Jennifer Cartwright – Team Manager: “We have all worked so hard and it feels so good to have a result that validates our efforts. We have had a tremendous amount of support from our sponsors that has really enabled us to improve both our bike as well as our program. We have set a clear, singular goal for this season and results like this just reinforce that we can accomplish it. As a BMW Dealer (Iron Horse Motorcycles) as well, making this happen on the S1000RR and all the support from BMW, customers and BMW fans has been overwhelming. We will continue working hard to put our bike on the podium for everyone!” This would not be possible without the support of all our amazing sponsors: BMW North America, Iron Horse Motorcycles, Peris Riding School, E-MotoTires.com, Ohlins, Kyle Racing, GPR, Driven, Hotbodies, USMegaMax.com, XCEL Trackdays, On The Level (OTL), RunGP, HT Moto, KurveyGirl.com, Speedcell, Top-Line Printing, BMW Motorcycle Magazine, Shoei, XpedX Team Iron Horse BMW/ESP is still actively looking for sponsorship.
