Only 10 of the 41 teams entered in the SunTrust MOTO-ST season-opener, the Daytona USA 300, participated in the first official, two-hour practice Saturday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway. Practice took place in cold and wet conditions. There is no rain forecast during Sunday afternoon’s race. Most of the MOTO-ST participants had already been on track during CCS/ASRA practice sessions or races earlier in the weekend. There will be an additional 20-minute warm-up session for MOTO-ST competitors Sunday morning prior to the start of the 500-kilometer Daytona USA 300 race. Wagner Motorsports Racing’s Mark Reynolds and Jurgen Frasch were credited with the fastest practice time, a 2:14.792 on their SST-class Aprilia RSV1000R Tuono. There will not be a qualifying session for the MOTO-ST race. The race grid will be formed based on the finishing order of the inaugural MOTO-ST 8 Hours at Daytona last October at Daytona and then by the order the teams entered the Daytona USA 300. The No. 20 Wagner Motorsports Racing Aprilia of Mark Reynolds set the fastest time in a wet practice for the opening round of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series, the DAYTONA USA 300 at Daytona International Speedway Saturday. The Worcester, Mass. rider lapped the 2.950-mile circuit in two minutes, 14.792 seconds for an average speed of 78.788 mph aboard his Aprilia Tuono 1000R. Reynolds will share the bike with fellow Worcester rider Jurgen Frasch in the Buell Motorcycle Company SuperSport Twins (SST) class in Sunday’s DAYTONA USA 300. “It was our first time out this weekend and I haven’t run the new infield layout before,” said Reynolds. “I wanted to learn the new corners and get our other rider used to making pit stops.” Second quickest overall and fastest in the Sport Twins (ST) class was the No. 79 GoBigRacing Suzuki SV650 shared between Canadian riders Ross Millson of Hamilton, Ont. and Keene, Ont.’s Paul Glenn with a time of 2:16.672. Third overall and second in SST was the No. 37 Team Old Pros Racing Suzuki SV1000S of Paul Schwemmer of South Daytona, Fla., John Ashmead of Ponce Inlet, Fla. and Jimmy Filice of Modesto, Calif. “We wanted to try some taller gearing through the tri-oval and I don’t know if this was a good test for that,” said Schwemmer, who set the team’s fast time of 2:18.192. “Those were my first laps on the new course, and we will run into rain conditions at some point during the season, so we should be prepared for it.” Quickest bike in the BMW Grand Sport Twins (GST) class was the No. 36 Team Ducati New York Ducati PS1000 of Eric Schnorrbusch of Stewertsville, N.J., Eric Helmbach of Califon, N.J. and Eric Wilson of Flanders, N.J. with a time of 2:20.581, putting them fourth overall. Rain fell throughout the practice session and a number of expected frontrunners chose not to participate, including the No. 46 San Jose BMW R1200 team of Brian Parriott of Calastoga, Calif. and Cherry Hill, N.J.’s Nate Kern, which won last October’s inaugural 8 Hours At Daytona. “Overall the conditions weren’t that bad,” pacesetter Reynolds said. “There was some standing water in the new section but the banking was very solid.” Sunday’s action opens with a warm-up session for the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series competitors at 9:10 a.m. followed by an autograph session at 11:30 a.m. The DAYTONA USA 300 gets the green flag at 2:00 p.m. Following this weekend’s event, this year’s SunTrust MOTO-ST Series will continue with the Homestead 500K, April 13-14 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the VIR 500K, April 27-29 at Virginia International Raceway, the Road America 500K, July 7-8 at Road America, the Iowa Speedway 500K at Iowa Speedway July 12-13, and the 8 Hours At Daytona Finale, October 19-20 at Daytona International Speedway. More, from a press release issued by Go Big Racing: GLENN, MILLSON SECOND QUICKEST OVERALL AND FASTEST IN ST CLASS AT DAYTONA Daytona Beach, Florida March 3, 2007 Go Big Racing’s Paul Glenn and Ross Millson were quickest in the Sport Twins (ST) class and second fastest overall during Saturday’s rain-shortened practice for Sunday’s SunTrust MOTO-ST, Daytona USA 300, 500K endurance race. On lap 30, the #79 Go Big Racing Suzuki posted their best time of 2:16:672 at the famous Daytona International Speedway with a top speed of 77.70 MPH. The all-Canadian entry was piloted by, 2006 Canadian SV650 Cup front runner Paul Glenn from Keene, Ontario and top ranked 2006 Canadian Amateur 600 racer, Ross Millson, from Hamilton, Ontario. Inclement weather shortened today’s practice session and a number of teams chose not to participate due to the poor conditions. Millson and Glenn opted to use the session to familiarize themselves with the new 2.950-mile infield track configuration. “Compared to the weather we left behind in Canada, we weren’t going to let a little rain dampen our spirits.” stated Glenn referring to a winter storm related flight cancellation and subsequent drive across the border to catch a flight from Buffalo. “Running in the rain on the banks of Daytona is a little intimidating, but the bike was running flawlessly.” added Millson. Tomorrow’s race grid will be based on the finishing order of last October’s inaugural MOTO-ST 8 Hours at Daytona and then by the order the teams entered the Daytona USA 300. Millson and Glenn, along with Karl Daigle, finished last year’s inaugural 8 Hours at Daytona race 11th overall and took third spot on the podium in the ST Class. Sunday’s schedule will begin with a warm-up session at 9:10 a.m. followed by an autograph session at 11:30 a.m. The SunTrust MOTO-ST, DAYTONA USA 300 gets underway at 2:00 p.m. EST. Live timing for the race will be available on the Official SunTrust MOTO-ST website, www.moto-st.com.
