West wins inaugural Larry H. Miller Superbike Challenge GTU race. (Tooele, Utah) Adverse conditions made tire choice a gamble for the first Larry H Miller Superbike Challenge GTU race, but Eureka Springs, Oklahoma’s Cory West’s dry-weather set-up helped him run to a convincing win and the $6000 purse. Jimmy Wood got a quick start and used his hole-shot to pull a 10-bike lead early in the race, running well on the damp tarmac. Once a dry line appeared, West took command passing Wood on lap 3. West put his head down and built a 20-second lead before backing off late in the race. “I was concerned about my tire choice, but once the track started to dry it worked out well. I’d like to thank Vesrah Suzuki for giving me a great bike to ride.” Taylor Knapp, Robertino Pietri and Russ Wikle stalked Wood, with Knapp and Pietri passing him on lap 8. The battle was on between Knapp and Pietri in a tight race through traffic, with Knapp holding on to second place and a $4000 purse. Pietri’s choice of slicks paid off late in the race on the drying track, posting the fastest lap of 1:57.8 The Larry H. Miller Superbike Challenge is support races for the 2009 HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship and FIM World Supersport Championship. It’s All Glory for Cory in World Superbike Support GTU Race, Dominated by Pirelli
Tooele, Utah: Road racer Cory West won the inaugural Larry H. Miller Challenge GTU (LHMCGTU) race at Miller Motorsports Park. West took the win in this support race for the 2009 United States round of the World Superbike Championship, riding a Suzuki GSX-R600 fitted with a snazzy pair of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa DOT race tires, that performed with aplomb in the wet-to-drying-to-dry racing conditions.
Taking the inaugural second place in the inaugural Larry H. Miller Challenge GTU (LHMCGTU) race was Taylor Knapp, also on a set of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa DOT race tires. Knapp crossed the finish line on his way to the podium 4.613 seconds behind race-winner West, in the somewhat confusing track conditions.
Taking the inaugural fourth-place finish in the inaugural Larry H. Miller Challenge GTU (LHMCGTU) race was Jimmy Wood also on a set of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa DOT race tires. With 36 riders competing in the Inaugural you-know-what, making it a huge success for Miller Motorsports Park, the facility plans on making it a regular part of the World Superbike program for this United States round of the series, no longer needing to shop for motorcycle entertainments from other sanctioning bodies.
With Pirelli Motorcycle Tire dominating the GTU class, which is open to all tire manufacturers, Sunday’s likewise GTO race will determine if every class at MMP is to be won by a Pirelli shod motorcycle. While WSBK tire service is supplied by “World” Pirelli, the tire services for the GTU and GTO classes at MMP is provided by Pirelli West Coast race tire vendor, CT Racing, and the deft hands of Corey Neuer and Chris McGuire.
Pirelli Tire North America designs, develops, manufactures and markets tires for passenger vehicles in both the original equipment and replacement markets, as well as marketing tires for motorcycles and race cars.
