Project 1 Atlanta Yamaha’s Dane Westby turned the fastest lap time during Thursday morning’s AMA Daytona SportBike provisional qualifying session at Daytona International Speedway, but shortly after Westby recorded his 1:51.860 the Oklahoma rider crashed in the chicane. But he was not the only one to fall during qualifying. The 20-minute session had at least four crashes, most of which happened in the chicane. “Yeah, we were having a party over there,” Westby joked. “After I crashed, I got up and went over the wall, then I saw a new dude crash there every lap.” Among those who crashed during the session were two of the fastest riders during practice on Wednesday – Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Josh Herrin and Latus Motors Racing Ducati’s Steve Rapp. Celtic Racing Orient Express’ P.J. Jacobsen also fell. All, including Westby, were relatively uninjured. Most riders speculated that they fell due to the extreme cold. The ambient temperature was in the low 40s during the session. Because of the cold, some riders, including Team M4 Monster Energy Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas and GEICO Powersports Suzuki’s Danny Eslick, opted to sit out and wait for the final qualifying session, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. local time. UPDATE: Jake Holden also crashed in the chicane during the provisional qualifying session. Holden told Roadracingworld.com that his right hand got caught under the handlebar of his Ducshop Racing Ducati 848, breaking his right thumb. Holden said he will not be able to continue in the event.
