Originally, the AMA Supersport class was to have a single, 20-minute qualifying session on Saturday afternoon, but the session was red-flagged after approximately 14 minutes due to a crashed bike lying in the track. It was then decided to convert Sunday’s 30-minute warm-up session into another qualifying session for Supersport. Saturday’s Supersport qualifying results are therefore provisional pending the results from Sunday’s session. Erion Racing Honda’s Jake Zemke was the fastest rider in Saturday’s shortened session with a new lap record time of 2:18.781 on his Dunlop-shod CBR600RR. The old lap record was a 2:19.007, which was set by Jamie Hacking 2006. Update: AMA Pro Racing and Daytona Motorsports Group (DMG) officials have changed their minds regarding how to treat Saturday afternoon’s red-flag-shortened AMA Supersport qualifying session. Instead of a qualifying session or a provisional qualifying session, the Saturday afternoon’s session will now be considered to have been a practice, and Sunday’s 30-minute session will now be the one and only qualifying period. When asked why they changed the classification of Saturday afternoon’s session from a qualifying session to a provisional qualifying session to a practice session, DMG’s Colin Fraser said, “Because we hadn’t had a chance to talk about it. I wasn’t sure who made the [original] decision [to reclassify it a provisional qualifying session], but I don’t think there was a fair opportunity for the riders to try and qualify. I think most of them only got three flying laps. “Once we got a minute to discuss things, we tried to work out something that would be fair and would follow precedent. We thought the fairest thing would be to let all the riders know the session Sunday morning is their qualifying session, and that one counts.
