Fairfax, VA. – The USGPRU National Championship winners will all be decided this weekend at the final round of the USGPRU season in Florida. The championship battles are the only thing closer than the on-track battles we’ve enjoyed all season long. We’ll be joining CCS Florida for a weekend of fantastic motorcycle racing in Jupiter, Florida. In the Pilot 125GP class, Garrett Gerloff holds a slim 1-point lead over veteran racer Nobi Iso, and a 6-point lead over fellow young-gun, Jake Lewis. With a 7-point spread between a first and second place finish, whoever wins the race, will walk away the champion. Defending champion, Iso has overcome his early season misfortune and is making a late season charge by winning his last 3 races. Gerloff and Lewis have been swapping the lead all season long in an east versus west battle, the likes of which we’ve not seen in USGPRU history. While Gerloff has been riding his 4-stroke MD250H all season, Lewis has just traded in his Honda RS125 for a similar hotrod Moriwaki and showed at Mid-Ohio that he can run with the fast guys out front. Will the 2-stroke or 4-strokes win? Will youth and exuberance prevail on the new 4-stroke MD250H? Or will the seasoned veteran teach the kids another lesson on his 2-stroke Aprilia? It’s anybody’s guess, but the one thing for sure is that this will be a battle you don’t want to miss! Likewise, in the Moto Liberty / RS Taichi 250GP, the season long battle is coming to a head as the injured Melissa Paris trails the Indy wildcard rider, Adam Roberts, by 18 points. Her late season charge was cut short due to a racing injury, but she bravely soldiered on to stay in the points chase. While the point spread is not insurmountable, Roberts’ consistency all season long would clearly tip the advantage in his favor. But with the determination shown by Paris, you can never count her out. We know they both have the skills, now the only question is who’s side lady luck will lean on for the championship. Finally, the Moriwaki MD250H Powered by HONDA championship is a three-way battle between Garrett Gerloff, Jake Lewis, and west coaster Ryan Matter. Like in the 125GP championship, only 6 points separate Gerloff and Lewis with a 7-point spread between first and second place points. Matter is in third, and trails by a substantial 38 points, but if anything happens, he is poised to clinch the win and possibly the championship. Local racer, Stephano Mesa currently sits in fourth in the points (and mathematically out of the chase), but may act as the spoiler in the mix as his home-court advantage may give him an edge he hasn’t had all season. For him, a race win would be as nice as a championship at this point and he too will be riding for all his worth. Does the defending champion, Lewis have what it takes? Can Gerloff hang on to win his first national title? Will the wildcard factor play into the outcome of this championship? With the racing in this spec class as close as it’s been all season, there is no way to predict who will win. The best you can do is come out this weekend to see for yourself what the future of North American roadracing has in store.
