Race Report: Masters of the Mountains Round 6
Salt Lake City, October 7, 2015 – The Utah Sport Bike Association’s (UtahSBA) Vortex Masters of the Mountains series concluded the season over the September 28th weekend with a variety of championships coming down to the last round. Under clear skies and with near perfect weather, the competitors met for the final time to decide their fates for the season.
Going into the final weekend, King of the Mountain GTU competitors Brian Childree and Kinzer Naylor were tied in points. In one of the most exciting races of the weekend, Michael Bradshaw rode his MotoStation sponsored Triumph 675 to the race win followed by Mark Harper on his HustleHard racing 675. Naylor and Childree duked it out all the way though the last lap where Naylor executed a last corner pass to bring home 3rd place in the race and the season championship.
In a dominating performance this season, 14-year-old Gauge Rees brought home the Middleweight Superbike, Moto 2 and Middleweight Superstock championships. Roadracing lightweight bikes with UtahSBA since 2012, the Roadracing World Young Gun Rees moved to a middleweight bike last season. The Trackstar Racing rider has really come into his own on his Yamaha R6 in 2015. “It was a great season,” said Rees. “Last year I was fighting for 3rd in the championships and this year I won 3! I spent some time training with Rickdiculous Racing this year and my dad built a really good bike, everything came together and I was able to put the heatshrink.com / Trackstar racing r6 on the box all year. Thanks to the UtahSBA for all of their work and support. It’s a great club.”
As noted in an earlier race report, defending champion and 2015 #1 plateholder Oleg Pianykh of Salt Lake City, Utah secured the season championship and the UtahSBA Masters of the Mountains #1 plate again for 2016.
In the Novice Championships Joshua Smith dominated the filed, winning the Novice GTU, Novice GTO and Combined GTU championships. “I had a great first season racing as a novice with the UtahSBA. Miller Motorstports is a world class venue, and all the racers involved are no different. With Kelly Rees at Trackstar Racing, and Ken Hill and Adam Bronfman at Rickdiculous Racing in my corner, I was in a great position for a successful season. Taking home three championships my novice year, I am excited to move up to expert for the 2016 season, and jump head first into the deep end of the pool,” said Smith.
The Utah Sportbike Association would like to thank all of the class sponsors and volunteers for making our season successful.
Utah Sport Bike Association is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization uses 100% of its revenue to support rider education, safety and racing throughout the intermountain west.
