Village Idiots Come From Behind To Win At a Soggy Texas World Speedway With CMRA
The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held its second round of Championship Endurance and Lightweight Sprint grids, and the first round of the US National Endurance Series this past Saturday, March 21, bringing over 10 hours of racing action to Texas World Speedway, in College Station, Texas for the very last time. Overnight rain had soaked the track, and light rain in the morning turned into steady to heavy rain at times as the racing started with temperatures in the low 60s F, making the track slippery and cold.
The Lightweight Sprint grids ran on the 1.8-mile short course and were a great warm up for the endurance races, with large grids of over 20 bikes each despite the rain. The Four81 Motos Grom Challenge had 23 entries, and the Junior Motard and Formula 8 classes for younger racers age 8-12 continued to grow. The 8-Hour Championship Endurance/US National Endurance Series finished out the day with a combined grid of 27 teams, including the Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike, C Superbike, Formula 2, and Modern Classic Endurance classes. The rain continued to pour down for the entire duration of the race, making conditions treacherous on the 2.9-mile course.
As the start lights went out, a soaking wet start put some heavy traffic together for an exciting out lap. As the pack shook itself out, the Privateer Tools team of Ulug Bayramoglu, Paul Coste, Kory Pappas, Richard Schiller, and Mark Sneed got out in front on their Dunlop rain tire shod Yamaha YZF-R6. They would hold onto the lead for the next two hours of racing, turning good lap times despite the conditions. However, during hour three, the Desert Rats Racing team of Stephen Guynes, Derek Thomas, and Greg Wanless took over the lead aboard their Dunlop rain tire shod Suzuki GSX-R750, holding out for over an hour.
Going into hour four, Big Boy Racing riders Bobby Davies, Robert Garza, and Roger Hill passed the Desert Rats on their Kawasaki ZX-6R to take over the lead, and would hold off all comers until going into hour seven, a tip over cost them the top spot. The Village Idiots team of Brandon Cleland, Chris Headley, John Orchard, and Garet Tomlinson slid into first on their Dunlop rain tire shod Yamaha YZF-R6, and held it down to the end of the race.
As the clock ticked down, the Village Idiots took the overall and C Superbike / Middleweight win. Team HPC riders Doug Frenchak, Paul Garcia, Jeromy Kumper, Nathaniel Orona, and Will Zamora took second overall and first in A Superbike / Heavyweight, with Big Boy Racing just behind them, finishing third overall and third in A Superbike. The Morning Wood team of Greg Abbott, Dirk Anderson, Jesse Davis, William Guthrie, and David Proler finished fourth overall and third in A Superbike on their BMW S1000RR. The Just Can’t Quit Racing team of Jeff Grant, Pete Martins, Gordon Miller, Paul Wilkinson, and Jeff Wrobel took fifth overall and fourth in A Superbike on their Suzuki GSX-R1000, and the Desert Rats rounded it out, finishing sixth overall and fifth in A Superbike.
The Red Bull Mini Moto races ran after the conclusion of the endurance race, and had a turnout of 20 four person teams. Racing was competitive and the Total Loss team of JC Camacho, Dustin Ducote, Alan Philips, and Darrell Ricks came out on top, taking the overall win and the coveted Austin Moto GP tickets.
The Farewell to TWS celebration continued on well into the night with pizza, music and adult beverages.
