Forza Monica and Village Idiots Take Endurance Wins at CMRA Season Opener

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held its first round of Championship Endurance, Ultra-Lightweight Endurance, and Lightweight Sprint grids this past Saturday, February 14, bringing over 8 hours of racing action to the road course at MSR Houston, in Angleton, Texas. Temperatures in the mid 60s F, with a light breeze made for great racing conditions.

The Lightweight Sprint grids ran on the 1.3-mile short course and were a great warm up for the endurance races, with almost all grids having 23 to 29 entries each. The Junior Motard class, for younger racers age 8-12, also had some good racing with only 0.0315-second separating the first and second place finishers at the checkers.

The 2-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance had a combined grid of 32 teams, with the endurance classes of 500 Classic, 500 Superstock, Ultra Lightweight GP, E Superstock, and Formula 4 represented, and ran on the 1.3 mile short course. The start lights went out and the Forza Monica team of Mark Andrews and Ryan Andrews took the lead with their Kawasaki 300R. Behind them, the Honda CBR500RR mounted team Pretty Hate Machine with Alan Phillips, Jesse Davis and David Tiede duked it out for second with the Unobtanium Racing team of Braeden Ortt, John Redford, and Gavin Williams riding a Kawasaki 300R and John Branch and Keith Hertell of Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill on a Honda CBR500RR.

Going into Hour 2, Forza Monica held the lead, while Unobtanium Racing got around Pretty Hate Machine for second. Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill now had their hands full with the Faltless Racing team of Robert Bradlaw, Danny Dominguez, Bill Erzal, Eric Falt, and Ted Phillips on a Kawasaki EX500, and the Honda CBR500R mounted Lawpup Racing team. Forza Monica crossed the line for the overall win and first in Ultra Lightweight GP Endurance (ULGPE), Unobtanium Racing took second overall and second in ULGPE, Pretty Hate Machine finished third overall and first in 500 Superstock. Faltless Racing snagged fourth overall and first in 500 Classic, the Lawpup Racing team of Danny Dominguez and Britten Geary finished fifth overall and second in 500 Superstock, with Team Von Hertell/Harris Hill finishing sixth overall and third in 500 Superstock.

The 4-Hour Championship Endurance finished out the day with a healthy combined grid of 29 teams, including the Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike, C Superbike, Formula 2, and Modern Classic Endurance classes. The weather was holding beautifully, and track conditions were outstanding for fast lap times on the 2.4 mile full course.

As the start lights went out, a good clean start put some heavy traffic together for an exciting out lap. As the pack shook itself out, the defending endurance champion team Village Idiots team of Brandon Cleland, Chris Headley, John Orchard, and Garet Tomlinson got the lead on their Dunlop shod Yamaha YZF-R6. Team HPC riders Paul Garcia, Jeromy Kumper, Nathaniel Orona and Will Zamora also aboard a Dunlop shod Yamaha YZF-R6, tangled with the Suzuki GSX-R750 mounted Desert Rats Racing team of Greg Wanless and Derek Thomas, also on Dunlops, for second.

A red flag was brought out on at the 1:27 minute mark with a rider going down in turn 17, pausing the race for 23 minutes. The bikes were re-gridded in the running order for the restart, and the race leaders went right back at it, stretching a lead over the rest of the field.

On the restart, the Pieces of Eight team of David Branyon, Shandra Crawford, Will Gruy, Michael Humphries, and Noah Reese shot up into second overall on their Yamaha YZF-R6, and held off the Desert Rats and Team HPC for almost on hour before the Desert Rats shook them both off to reclaim second. As the clock ticked down, the Village Idiots stretched their lead on the rest of the field to six laps, taking the checkers for the overall and C Superbike win. Desert Rats Racing finished second overall and first in Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike. Team HPC crossed the line third overall and second in A Superbike, with Pieces of Eight just behind them on their Dunlop mounted Yamaha finishing fourth overall and third in A Superbike. The Duncan Lacour Racing team of Drake Duncan, Bryan LeMaire and Kyle Ohnsorg finished fifth overall and second in C Superbike on their Suzuki GSX-R600, and the In Torque We Trust riders Jim Dugger, Andy Gilliland, and Jorge Guerrero Jr. brought their Buell 1125R across the line in sixth overall and first in Modern Classic.
