Derek Wagnon took five podiums during CMRA’s sprint event Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Eagles Canyon Raceway, in Decatur, Texas. A morning thunderstorm of rain mixed with quarter-sized hail and strong, gusty winds made for interesting conditions on the 2.5-mile course. The clouds gave way to sunshine on the twisting, rolling hills course by the time the starting lights went out for the beginning of racing action.
Wagnon once again rode two bikes to take the wins in: Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, B Superstock Expert, and B Superbike Expert on his Suzuki GSX-R750, and Houston Superbikes – Heavyweight Twins Expert on a borrowed KTM RC8.
Sunday’s headline Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race saw Wagnon battling with Brandon Cleland aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 and Kawasaki 636 mounted Eddie Thornton. When the start lights went out, it was a dash for the lead as the 22 bike grid poured into Turn One. Wagnon shot out to the front, with Cleland and Thornton in hot pursuit. Wagnon turned a fastest lap of 1:48.640 on lap 6 of the 8 lap race. Cleland and Thornton weren’t giving up though, as Cleland came back with a 1:49.160 and Thornton answered with a 1:49.418. The wind was picking up, and Wagnon threw the hammer down, taking the checkers with a 1.940 lead over second. Cleland gave Thornton a Heisman, finishing second 10 seconds ahead. Brandon Young got by Conner Blevins for fourth, with Eric Williams, Joseph Caruso, Jay Newton, Jeff Wrobel, and Brady Ipock rounded out the top 10.
Cleland also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race. Bringing awareness to finding a cure for Breast Cancer is an important aspect of this race and a donation is made by the CMRA to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each entry in the race.
Daniel Adams shined bright for the Lightweights with four podiums with his Suzuki SV650, taking the wins in Lightweight Twins Expert, Formula 2 Expert, D Superstock Expert and D Superbike Expert.
Tim Rose took Top Novice again with four wins on his Yamaha YZF-R6 in Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, and Fastline Motorcycle School – C Superbike Novice.

The CMRA event at Eagles Canyon Raceway was filled with exciting racing. Saturday consisted of Mini bike sprints and Team 60 races. The Team 60 event consists of 2 riders splitting a 60 minute race. Highlighting both team work and strategy. The hour long race was won by the Pirelli shod team of Derek Wagnon and Eddie Thornton. In the excitement of the race, CMRA Hall of Fame racer Ty Howard was leading the field when he experienced a mechanical problem with his Pirelli Superbike slick equipped KTM RC8. He then made his way back to the pits with the transponder. Once the transponder was mounted to his team mates bike, Brandon Young proceeded to fight his way into 3rd place in the overall standings. In the mini sprint classes Walter Walker III (Trey) scooped up wins in the Formula 5 and 6 classes.
In Sunday’s schedule there are 39 classes of racing. Pirelli riders taking 28 class wins. There were some standout performances of the weekend with SCRC sponsored rider Derek Wagnon riding his P1 Racing tuned GSXR 750 to 5 wins in all 5 races entered. Brandon Cleland stayed undefeated in the 600cc races racking up 2 wins and a 2nd overall finish in the Formula 1 race. The premier race is an extended sprint format complete with qualifying in the morning. It offers the best racing of the weekend as there are cash payouts waiting for the top 5 finishers. The first 4 riders to cross the finish line were all on Pirelli tires.
In the Novice ranks Tim Rose again dominated with 4 wins on his P1 Racing tuned R6 and while being contested closely by the also Pirelli shod Michael Klesel. It made for some great racing all day. Thomas Eimermacher and Paul Garcia racked up 2 wins each on their Pirelli shod machines. Dean Webster, Steve Nedd and Trey Walker all racked up a win each as well.
The owner of South Central Race Center (SCRC) was noted as saying “The track surface had been patched recently with Concrete. It was aggressive on tires; luckily I had plenty of on hand stock to cover all the situations and my customers really went out there and kicked butt.
