Wagnon Wins Four, Kelsey Retires with Two CMRA Sprint Podiums at Texas World Speedway

Derek Wagnon took four podiums during CMRA’s sprint event Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. Cloudy skies, cold temperatures and a stiff wind made for interesting conditions on the 2.9-mile course. Weekend sprint race entries numbered 716…a great turn out despite the rainy weather forecast. Large grids and fast lap times were the order of the day as CMRA’s number one plate holder Danny Kelsey gridded up for the last few times.

Wagnon once again rode two bikes to take four wins: B Superstock Expert on his Suzuki GSX-R750, and Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, 212Decals.com A Superbike Expert, and Houston Superbikes – Heavyweight Twins Expert with his KTM RC8.

Kelsey, having announced his retirement from road racing before the weekend, went out in style on his Suzuki GSX-R1000, taking the win in A Superstock Expert and third in the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert.

In Sunday’s headline the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race, defending Number 1 plate holder Kelsey had his hands full with Eddie Thornton and Wagnon. Thornton rode a BMW S1000RR, and Wagnon had his KTM RC8 to pit against Kelsey’s Suzuki GSX-R1000. When the start lights went out, it was a mad scramble for the lead as the 29 bike grid poured into Turn One. Wagnon shot out to the front, with Thornton hot on his heels. Wagnon turned a fastest lap of 1:44.133 and Thornton answered with a 1:44.582 on lap 2 of the race. The wind was picking up, and Kelsey settled into a comfortable pace at 1:45.420. Kelsey put his head down, and held his position, even with Brandon Cleland aboard his Yamaha YZF-R6 and Conner Blevins on his Kawasaki ZX636 on the attack from the rear. Wagnon stretched out the legs of his RC8, gapping Thornton by 8.146 seconds for the win. Kelsey firmly held off Cleland, finishing third for the final time. Conner Blevins, Eric Williams, Billy Gonzalez, Jay Newton, Brady Ipock, and Jeff Wrobel rounded out the top 10.

Cleland won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race. Bringing awareness to finding a cure for Breast Cancer is an important aspect of this race and a donation is made by the CMRA to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each entry in the race.

Jim Whitten also took home four podiums with his Ducati 1000SS, taking the wins in Lightweight Twins Expert, Formula 40 Lightweight Expert, and second place in Formula 2 Expert and D Superbike Expert.

Tim Rose was Top Novice again with four podiums on his Yamaha YZF-R6, winning Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, and taking second place in Fastline Motorcycle School – C Superbike Novice.
