Derek Wagnon took home multiple podiums during CMRA’s 2014 season opener event Sunday, February 16, 2014 at MSR Houston in Angleton, Texas. Cloudy skies with a breeze kept temperatures into the low 70’s for good conditions on the 2.9-mile course. Sunday sprint race entries numbered 747, just shy of last year’s opening round of 753. Large grids and a spectator-packed paddock was the order of the day. Opening ceremonies included a military honor guard and skydivers during the National Anthem, a great way to kick off an exciting day of racing.

Wagnon rode two bikes to take four podiums home, winning Team Mancuso Powersports SW – B Superbike Expert and B Superstock Expert on his Suzuki GSX-R750. Wagnon took his KTM RC8 to a first in Houston Superbikes – Heavyweight Twins Expert and a third in the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula 1 Expert race.

In Sunday’s headline Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race, defending Number 1 plate holder, Danny Kelsey, had his hands full with Eddie Thornton and Derek Wagnon. Thornton rode a BMW S1000RR, and Wagnon had a KTM RC8 to pit against Kelsey’s Suzuki GSX-R1000. When the start lights went out, it was a mad scramble for the lead as the 33 bike grid poured into Turn One. Kelsey managed to get to the front on lap 2, but he was under siege from Thornton and Wagnon. Thornton took the lead from Kelsey, who put down the fastest time of the race on lap 5, turning an amazing 1:33.356. Kelsey put his head down, methodically going after Thornton, but was under pressure from Wagnon breathing on his tail in third. Thornton eventually gapped Kelsey by 2.75 seconds for the win. Kelsey firmly held off Wagnon, finishing second, leaving Derek Wagnon in third. Brandon Cleland, Conner Blevins, Brandon Young, Billy Gonzalez, Dewayne Davis, Eric Williams, and first year Expert, Blake Cypert rounded out the top 10.

Brandon Cleland won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race. Bringing awareness to finding a cure for Breast Cancer is an important aspect of this race and a donation is made by the CMRA to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each entry in the race.

Daniel Adams also took home multiple podiums, going four for four on his Suzuki SV650, taking home the wins in D Superstock Expert, D Superbike Expert, Lightweight Twins Expert, and second place in Formula 2 Expert.

Top Novice for the weekend was Tim Rose with four podiums on his Yamaha YZF-R6, taking the wins in Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, and Fastline Motorcycle School – C Superbike Novice.

 This past weekend marks the beginning of the CMRA 2014 race season. The club enjoyed a record setting grid of 700 plus entries, and such the competition was fierce. Saturday started with a Lightweight Endurance race 2 hours long, then followed by a 4 hour long Big Bike Endurance Race.

The 2 hour Lightweight Endurance ended with a 1-2 finish for Pirelli. Team Super Awesome Machine (Jesse Davis, David Tiede, Alan Phillips and Brandon Altmeyer) won the overall race on a CBR500 on Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa DOT’s, followed by F Bomb Racing (Dirk Anderson, Brian Millsap, Thomas Delaney and William Guthrie) in 2nd overall aboard a Ninja 300 fitted with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa DOT tires.

The 4 hour Big Bike Endurance was an exciting event. With a packed grid, the I Like Big Gas Team of Scott Buckley, Craig Montgomery, Dewayne Davis and Brandon Young brought home the win aboard their GSXR 1000 shod with Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slicks. The race came down to the wire when the Big Gas team took the lead late in the race, and built a gap of 44 seconds with Dewayne Davis at the controls.

Sunday welcomed the sprint series into action. With full grids and some of the fastest riders in the country in attendance, the racing was sure to be fast and challenging. Pirelli riders won 26 out of 35 total classes. Expert rider Eddie Thornton won the Formula 1 race and set the fastest lap of the weekend (1:33.2) on hid P1 Racing prepared BMW S1000RR. Danny Kelsey, current #1 plate holder, rode his RPSRaceTeam.com Suzuki GSXR 1000 to victory in Superstock A and Superbike A. While the #111 of Derek Wagnon piloted his P1 Racing tuned GSXR 750 to wins in B Superstock and B Superbike. Wagnon also rode to victory in Heavyweight Twins aboard a SCRC sponsored KTM RC8. AMA regular Brandon Cleland, piloted his RES built R6 shod with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa DOT tires to strong victories in C Superstock and C Superbike.

To round out the weekend’s strong performance of Pirelli tires Novice rider Tim Rose brought home 4 out of 4 wins aboard his Diablo Supercorsa shod R6. Tim’s wins came in C Superstock, B Superstock, C Superbike and B Superbike. Novice rider Tony Nguyen piloted his P1 Racing built GSXR 1000 to 3 wins in A Superstock, A Superbike and Formula 1 aboard Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slicks.
