Wagnon Takes Two Wins With CMRA at MSR Houston
Derek Wagnon took two wins at CMRA’s sprint event Sunday, September 21, 2014 at MSR Houston in Angleton, Texas. A second day of humid heat in the 90’s made for fast lap times on the 2.38 mile course.
Wagnon rode a Kawasaki ZX-10R and his Suzuki GSX-R750 to the wins in Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, B Superstock Expert, turning a blazing 1:32.125 lap, just .065 of a second off Ty Howard’s 2008 record of 1:32.040
Brandon Cleland proved to be the fastest Yamaha YZF-R6 again, winning South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, and second place in Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, and B Superstock Expert. Cleland also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race had a 16 bike grid, and as they lined up for the start, the battle was already brewing between Kawasaki ZX-10R mounted Wagnon, Cleland aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6, and Eddie Thornton riding his BMW S1000RR. These were the top three qualifiers yet again, and lap times were fast.
The starting lights went out, and the race was on as Wagnon drag raced Cleland and Thornton into the first turn and took the lead. With Cleland and Thornton on his tail, Wagnon put his head down and took off, turning a fastest lap of the race on lap 2 turning a 1:32.125. Cleland and Thornton went at it, with Cleland getting by Thornton for second with a fastest lap of 1:33.047. Thornton, still in pursuit, came back with a 1:33.457, but couldn’t get past Cleland. Meanwhile, Jeff Wrobel, riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 had his hands full trying to hold off Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Eric Williams for fourth. Wrobel turned a fastest lap of 1:36.003, and Williams answered with an even faster lap of 1:35.981 . You could throw a blanket over sixth through ninth places as everyone was running a 1:37 and change. As the final laps wound down, Wagnon put his head down to get a little distance on Cleland, stretching his lead to just over 5 seconds, taking the checkers for the win. Cleland firmly held onto second, with Thornton taking third, Wrobel held off Williams for fourth, with Jay Newton, Alan Phillips, Bobby Davies, James Caraballo, and Brady Ipock rounding out the top 10.
Bringing awareness to finding a cure for Breast Cancer is an important aspect of this race and a donation is made by the CMRA to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each entry in the race.
The racing day was ended after race 13 due to an incident during lap two of race 14, when two riders were involved in a crash and sustained injuries. The CMRA family is pleased to share that the injured riders are doing better and on the road to recovery, and still sends prayers out to the riders and their families for continued improvement.
CMRA’s president, John Orchard said,”As most everyone is aware, the CMRA races were cut short this past weekend at MSR-H. This decision was the result of two separate incidents that occurred earlier in the day involving Allen Dye and Paul Bradley which caused red flag delays, combined with the seriousness of another incident involving Derek Wagnon and Guillermo Gonzalez. The impact of the incident was compounded by the fact that it was witnessed by of so many spectators on the front straight. The overwhelming response from all in the paddock was concern for each of the riders. The decision was made to call it a day and focus on the riders and their families.
“I want to briefly call out a special gratitude of thanks to Walter Walker and all of the CMRA staff who worked through very difficult circumstances and did their job well. Also, a huge thanks to Joe Caruso for his expertise as a vascular surgeon where he took charge of a difficult situation and made a huge difference for those involved. The CMRA family continues to keep in close contact with each of our racers and their families.
“At the same time, Walter and the Board of Directors are working through the details of the incidents from the weekend. We are objectively reviewing the risk that is an inherent part of the sport to balance that against safety issues that each track presents to be sure we’re doing everything possible to minimize unnecessary risk to our riders with an unemotional analysis.”
