Enthusiast groups and individual members of the motorcycle community helped to boost the Roadracing World Action Fund’s total fund raising to date to $488,198.64.
The Roadracing World Action Fund promotes the use of soft barriers at motorcycle racetracks, to reduce injuries caused by riders hitting walls and other hard objects or surfaces after crashing. The Fund accomplishes this through educational programs, demonstrations and deployment of soft barriers such as Air Fence*.
The WERA BBS Auction 2006 organized and run by moderator Dave “Dave K” Kopfinger saw prolific BBS poster “Mad Brad” Wilson make five separate donations, the latest for $1402, for a grand total of $3803. Other Auction participants included Eric V. Hunter, $600; John Stauber $350; Darrin Talbott, $350; Alan Sessarego, $300; Peter Kirsh $275; Greg Travis, $160; H. Michael Falconer, $150; Dan De Bry, $140; Gill Cutchen, $100; Kevin Bowen, $85; 6-time bid winner Lori Kobayashi, $80; Chris Lane, $75; Richard Riedling II, $60; Stacey Clark, $50; Peter Pellack, $41; Paul Finn, $30; Keith Smith, $25; and Theresa Fitzcharles, $10. The WERA BBS Auction 2006 brought in a total of $14,004 for the Action Fund.
Wilson sent an additional $2100 commemorating Jamie Hacking’s two 2006 AMA Championships, stating that it was “Hacking’s congratulatory contribution on an outstanding year!”
In addition to his WERA BBS Auction donation of $300, Alan Sessarego, motorsports photographer and author of the just-published Time to Look Back, (a two-volume set of 400-page books containing over 1000 color photographs from the last 12 years–1990s to 2005–of AMA and World Superbike Racing in the United States – available online) added $500 “in appreciation of the riders of professional motorcycle racing.”
Darrin Talbott’s WERA BBS Auction participation totaled $550, and he has continued to support the Action Fund with contributions of $100 and $150 since the auction closed, the latter donation “for Dave K and the Pirate.” Talbott, honored as the Roadracing World Action Fund’s Most Frequent Contributor, has contributed 13 times over three years.
The 2006 Virginia State H.O.G. Rally donated $1500 in the name of Aaron Stevenson/CornerspeedRiderschools. Site Co-ordinator David McCoy wrote, “During our rally this year, Cornerspeed made it possible for us to take approximately 300 Harley-Davidson motorcycles around Virginia International Raceway in Danville, Virginia for parade laps. We had a great time with this as you can image the sight and sound of our bikes on the track at one time. For making this possible we asked Aaron for the charity of his choice for our donation. You were it, and when it was announced that day at the track, we got a standing ovation from the ‘sportbike’ riders that were there to race that day. This brought it home to all of us that the motorcycle family is just that – one family.”
Scott Willock, who, with this latest contribution, has donated a total of $2300, wrote: “On Nov. 4th, I married my long-time girlfriend Jessica Proctor. Instead of handing out silly wedding favors to our guests, we pledged to donate $10 per attendee to the Roadracing World Action Fund. Jessica and I are pleased to make this donation in the amount of $800, and each of our 80 wedding guests can be proud of the fact that they are helping to save racers’ lives!”
The Action Fund benefits continually from those who have pledged to make regularly scheduled donations. www.Kurveygirl.com, a website featuring unique motorcycle parts, donates a portion of its profits monthly, and so far has raised $140. Elaine Seasly participates at work with the Raytheon Charitable Giving through Payroll Deduction program, the latest quarterly donation of $36 making her grand total now $176.80. Chevron Employees’ “People Making a Difference” Campaign participants Michael Arenella and Chris Brown also make regular contributions through payroll deductions to the Action Fund, each donating three times so far this year with cumulative totals of $91.50 and $450, respectively.
The Roadracing World Action Fund, Inc. is a 501(3)c not for profit organization and donations are tax deductible.
