LEEDS, Ala. The WERA National Series returns to action this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, marking the penultimate round of the 2006 season for the WERA/Bridgestone National Endurance Series and the WERA/Michelin National Challenge Series. Saturday’s four-hour endurance race, which begins at 12:45 p.m., is once again expected to draw a lot of competitors. Last year’s race featured 47 teams on the starting grid, with Vesrah Suzuki taking the win at the checkered flag. This year, Vesrah will be looking to win again and add to their string of consecutive victories. Team Velocity Racing’s Heavyweight Superstock class win at Barber last year cinched the class championship for them, but this year they find themselves locked in a battle with both ARNCHU Racing and 5150 Racing. A win at Barber would be a huge championship advantage for any of the teams. In Mediumweight Superstock, LOC Endurance’s win during the previous round at Summit Point has narrowed the gap to points leaders Dalke Motorsports. And in Lightweight Superbike, the battle is still raging between Ghetto Customs and Neighbor of the Beast. Sunday will feature the ten-lap National Challenge Series races, which get started at noon. Last year, Butler Machinery’s Robert Jensen took an impressive four wins during the day, winning every Superstock division race that he entered as well as Formula 1. With the championship still undetermined in each of those classes, fans can expect to see a lot of intense racing at Barber as riders try to earn all the points they can before heading to the Grand National Finals next month. A number of top riders will be joining the competition this weekend, including Jensen, who will be aiming to repeat his performance from last year. AMA Pro Racing riders Opie Caylor, Matt Lynn and Brian Stokes are all expected to turn out to compete against the WERA National regulars, as well. There will be 12 races on Sunday, including the always popular WERA Minis. Tickets for Friday through Sunday are $30, Saturday and Sunday only are $20, and Sunday tickets are $15.
