Bradl endures eventful race one at Misano
Italian Round
Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, Italy
The opening WorldSBK race of the ‘Riviera di Rimini Round’ was an eventful one for the Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team and for Stefan Bradl, who was forced back to the pits during lap two due to a technical issue. The 27-year-old German eventually returned to the track and completed another 11 laps, but they were not enough for him to be classified at the end of the race.
Bradl was running in 17th position before he started to drop further down the order and then returned to the pits. The team did an extensive check of the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2 and, later, Stefan got back on track to test the changes made to the bike and to collect some useful data ahead of race two.
The second race of the 2017 FIM Superbike World Championship at Misano World Circuit will get underway tomorrow at 13:00 local time (GMT +2), after the usual 15-minute warm up scheduled at 9:00.

There’s not much to say, really. The race was virtually over for me on the first lap and, although I had to stop, the team was able to check what was going on and make a quick fix. This allowed me at least to go out again and complete 10-11 laps to check if everything was working correctly and collect some data. Hopefully things will be better tomorrow.

It was another hard day at the office but surely one to learn from. We are trying many different things to give Stefan the right package to perform well but clearly something didn’t go the right way today. We were able to collect some valuable data, though, after he returned to the track and we can now make some comparisons in order to try something different for tomorrow.

Sykes Wins And Rea Third After Misano Drama
After taking his first race win of the season at Donington Park in the previous round Tom Sykes (KRT) secured his second today at Misano, despite starting the final lap in fourth position. Jonathan Rea (KRT) fell after colliding with the last-lap race leader Chaz Davies, just before Jonathan was set to make a final move to try re-take the lead he had held on two separate occasions in a dramatic 21-lap race.
In a race full of incident and close competition Rea took the lap one lead, only to be passed by Michael van der Mark who was in a leading position for the next 13 laps. Rea had to take avoiding action and lost time to the riders behind after van der Mark suddenly fell, but Rea still re-took the lead, until lap 19, when Davies passed him.
Tom’s race had seen him drop back from his pole position start to spend most of the race in fifth position; then fourth after van der Mark’s crash. When the then third-placed Marco Melandri fell on the last lap Tom moved into a podium position – which suddenly became a winning position after the collision of Davies and Rea.
Alex Lowes took second, passing Jonathan, who nonetheless got going again for a podium place. In finishing in third place Jonathan took his career podium total to 100.
Sykes had set new track best lap of 1’33.662 to win Superpole earlier in the day, with Rea just one place behind on the race one grid. It was Sykes’ 40th Superpole win and his second of the season, although he was unable to regain his optimal pace through the race, despite strong and consistent performances all through practice.
In the championship, with one more Misano race to go on Sunday 18th, Rea has 276 points, Sykes just 46 behind, on 230.
Tom Sykes, stated: “In racing it is all circumstances. Like in Donington we had great speed but also starting with the reverse grid. In the end the circumstances meant we were able to win today and finally for this I am happy. We will take the 25 points and nothing more to ask for. For tomorrow we need to improve the bike settings. Already in race one I was thinking about tomorrow but all of a sudden other riders had problems. In racing you have to accept things like this and I only hope that Chaz is OK after I saw some footage of his crash on the slow-down lap. It looked a nasty incident so I hope Chaz is going to be OK and will be fit to race tomorrow. In this moment we will take the 25 points and get them under my own steam tomorrow.”
Jonathan Rea, stated: “The plan was to just release the brake and go up the inside of Chaz on the last corner, but unfortunately for both of us it did not get that far. Especially for Chaz. He made a mistake and tucked the front and I am super-sorry that I hit him but I had absolutely nowhere to go. I hope he is OK. I can’t remember ever being on the podium in a race I have fallen in, maybe in a wet race but probably not, to be honest. In van der Mark’s crash earlier in the race I had to go off track. I was so close to almost hitting him and then his bike almost hit me. It was certainly eventful. It was a shame for me and Chaz as we were fighting for the victory.”

Fourth for Torres and Althea BMW at Misano

A first Superbike race at the Misano World Circuit that proved ‘hot’ in all senses of the word for the Althea BMW Racing team, scoring its best result of the season so far with Jordi Torres crossing the line fourth; tenth for Raffaele De Rosa. In the Stock1000 category, Marco Faccani, at ease on his home track, has qualified third for tomorrow’s 15-lap race.
Superpole 1 two fast laps for De Rosa that saw him position second mid-session. After a tyre change the Italian headed back out on track but a crash at turn 4 unfortunately prevented him from fighting for access to SP2. Raffaele finished fifth (1’35.967), meaning a fifth row start for the weekend’s races.
Superpole 2: eighth after his first exit, Torres was back out in the final minutes with the qualifying tyre. His penultimate lap proved to be his quickest and a time of 1’34.962 saw him close ninth, so third row on the grid for the Spaniard.
SBK – Race 1: Lying 11th and 13th respectively after one lap, Torres and De Rosa soon got into a rhythm. While the Spaniard made up a little ground in the initial stages, the Italian unfortunately fell back slightly. Closing the gap to Forés, Jordi passed him on lap six, continuing to fight with this fellow countryman through the subsequent laps, before passing Laverty on lap nine. In the final stages, a consistent pace allowed Torres to cross the line in final fourth place. Raffaele, a few seconds back from the riders immediately ahead of him, ran a solitary second half of the race, crossing the line tenth.
Jordi Torres:
“Unfortunately, in Superpole I wasn’t able to make the most of the qualifying tyre. Then in the race we were all suffering somewhat from the hot conditions. I battled with Forés and then with Laverty. In the final phase, when others started to suffer, we were able to remain upright. I know we were lucky too, but I’m pleased with our performance today.”
Raffaele da Rose:
“I made up a little at the start but I then I shifted into the wrong gear, running long and losing ground as a result. We need to understand why, as that had never happened before. My pace wasn’t bad after that but the mistakes at the start compromised my race and prevented me from doing more…”

Dramatic victory for Sykes in Rimini sunshine
Sykes wins Race 1 at Pirelli Riviera Di Rimini Round, with Lowes and Rea also on the podium as Davies and Melandri crash on last lap
A breathtaking Race 1 at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” on Saturday afternoon saw Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) take advantage of three big crashes ahead of him to secure maximum points, with Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) also on the podium.
In the final stages of the last lap Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) crashed out of the lead and was hit by Rea, with Rea able to pick up his bike to finish third, behind winner Sykes and second placed Lowes. Moments before that incident Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) also crashed out when fighting for a podium finish and he would ultimately finish 15th.
Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) also spectacularly crashed out at turn 13 with 7 laps to go, with Rea close by, after the Dutchman had led for most of the race. Van der Mark took over at the front from provisional leader Rea in the early stages and had built up a big lead at one stage before his advantage decreased and then he went down.
Behind Sykes, Lowes and Rea the top five also featured Jordi Torres (Althea BMW Racing Team) and Xavi Fores (BARNI Racing Team).
Meanwhile in the first race of the Pirelli Riviera Di Rimini Round, Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia), Randy Krummenacher (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), Roman Ramos (Team Kawasaki Go Eleven), Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia) and Raffaele de Rosa (Althea BMW Racing Team) were all in the top ten.
There were retirements for Stefan Bradl (Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team), Leandro Mercado (IODARacing) and Riccardo Russo (Guandalini Racing). Leon Camier (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) crashed late on but remounted to finish 11th.
Race 2 at the #RiminiWorldSBK round takes place at 1pm on Sunday.
1st – Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team)
“It was a different win but it was 25 points all the same. For this way we have to be happy, I arrived on my limit, we knew the tyre never had the push but this is racing. The guys at the front were incredibly fast but we arrived at our limit, understood it and rode around it.”
2nd – Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team)
“It was really lucky to get the podium, but the main things are that the guys are alright as the conditions were really tricky out there. I was really happy with my pace and I was doing as good laps as I have done all weekend on lap 20, so you have to be there at the end I’m enjoying the moment.”
3rd – Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team)
“It was a crazy race, I was settling my pace as Van der Mark crashed. I ran off track which allowed everyone to catch me again and I did everything I could to plan a last lap attack, into the last corner. But once Davies crashed, unfortunately I hit him I’m so sorry for this but I had nowhere to go. Right now I am thinking about him and I hope he’s ok.”

Unlucky Race 1 for the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati team at Misano: Melandri and Davies both crash during the last lap. The Welshman will not take part in Race 2
Race 1 of the 2017 WorldSBK Championship at Misano Adriatico (Italy) did not yield the expected results for the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati team. After a long and exciting battle for the win, both Melandri and Davies crashed out during the last lap at turn 4 and 14 respectively.
Melandri rejoined the race to finish in 15th position. Davies, who was hit by a blameless Rea, following closely behind, got up but couldn’t finish the race and was taken to the medical center instead. He was diagnosed with a closed thoracic trauma, and was then transported by ambulance to Rimini to undergo a CAT scan, which showed a fracture of the transverse process of L3 (3rd lumbar vertebra). Further examinations also indicate a contusion of the left thumb. Davies will not take part in Race 2 and will observe a period of rest before being re-examined ahead of the Laguna Seca round.
The Aruba.it Racing – Ducati team will resume action at 09:30 (CET) on Sunday for a 15-minutes warm-up session ahead of Race 2, which is scheduled to start at 13:00 local time.
Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati #33) – 15th
“This morning I had a great feeling on the bike, but track conditions changed with the heat and I didn’t have the same confidence during the race. When Rea passed me in the final phases, we lost about half a second from the lead. In the last lap, I wanted to stay as close as possible to the front because I thought the fight between Rea and Davies could open up a window of opportunity, but as soon as I let off the brake at turn 4 I lost the front. Unfortunately, we struggled with grip throughout the race. In retrospect, it would have been better not to push so hard, but overall I’m still satisfied because in the past two rounds we struggled a lot, while the competitiveness shown on this track gives me confidence.”

“The end of today’s race leaves a bitter taste in our mouth. Chaz and Marco rode a memorable race, both showing they could win, but they crashed out during the last lap. Marco will have another go at it tomorrow, while we’re deeply saddened by what happened to Chaz. He will now observe a rest period, but he has a strong character and I’m sure he’ll tackle it with the same mettle he’s racing with.”

CAMIER NARROWLY MISS OUT ON THE TOP 10 DESPITE A CRASH
The Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” provided the venue for Race1 of this MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship round n°7. Team MV Agusta Reparto Corse has achieved a result below its expectations, with Camier able to close 11th despite a crash a few laps from the finish, while Jacobsen and Zaccone get the 3rd and 6th row in WorldSSP starting grid.
WorldSBK – FP3, SP2, Race1
After a 6-lap Tissot-Superpole2 session, Leon Camier set his fastest lap in 1’34.628, getting the 6th position in Race1 starting grid.
When the lights goes out on the “Marco Simoncelli”, Team MV Agusta Reparto Corse’s rider Leon Camier started from the second row and start fighting into the top 10 area, successfully passing his rivals Eugine Laverty for the 7th position. The 30-year-old Ashford Kent (UK) rider managed to bring the MV Agusta F4 RC machine until the 6th position, but a crash, caused by the loss of grip at the front wheel, forced him to step back till the 11th final position. Leon will return on track tomorrow for Race2, looking for some more precious points for the championship standing, which at the moment sees him stable in 8th place.
WorldSSP – FP3, SP1, SP2
Coming from a very positive Friday’s qualifying result, sawing him finish in 3rd place, today Patrick Jacobsen failed to get the expected results in the Tissot-Superpole2 heat, ending up with a 1’39,535 lap time which means the 8th position in the starting grid.
At work on some setup problems on his MV Agusta F3 675 machine, Alessandro Zaccone got the 16th time in the starting grid (2nd in the ESS class) and tomorrow the Italian rider will kick off the race from the 6th row.
Leon Camier #2 WorldSBK – The race was going pretty good, I just had some issued at the start of the race, as I got caught up in other riders fighting in the first corners. All in all I had a very good rhythm and the lap time was very good as well. I am just sorry the front tyre was loosing performance and I made a little mistake in turn 7 costing me several positions.
Patrick “PJ” Jacobsen #99 WorldSSP – It was a quite difficult day in qualifying, we struggled more then we expected and I also had some little technical issues during the session as well. Anyway, I am still positive and I am confident we will be fast again in tomorrow’s race.
Alessandro Zaccone #61 ESS – Even if we still have a lot of work ahead, I am happy to say today we made a step forward with the bike’s setting, which is really good to me. We will work hard on the data we got today in order to be ready for the race tomorrow. I really want to do a good race for my Italian supporters, both for me and MV Agusta.
