Shawn Higbee wrestled his big, burly Buell 1125R around the tight, twisty Streets of the Streets of Willow track better than anyone and walked away with his second Toyota Gold Cup Unlimited Formula One win of the 2010 Willow Springs Motorcycle Club season, on Sunday.
Higbee took his Dunlop-shod Buell to the lead immediately and was never headed across the start/finish line. But it was close, as Yamaha YZF-R6-mounted Young Gun Bryce Prince was only 0.727-second back at the end of the 12-lap event.
It was not only Higbee’s second Formula One win of the year in WSMC competition, but it was on his second bike on a second track. Earlier this season, Higbee had taken a Moto Forza Ducati 1098R to the win on the big, fast 2.5-mile main track at Willow a road course that is about as different from the Streets circuit as is possible.
It was a day when unique bikes ran up front. Rounding out the podium was James Randolph aboard a KTM RC8R, although he was 22 seconds back at the flag. Finishing behind the top trio were Karl Lowry, Chris Duran, Scott Tillery and Gary Orr. Only eight riders started; Reno Karimian dropped out on the fifth lap.
Prince was flying on the YZF-R6, taking wins in 600cc Superstock, 600cc Modified Production and 650cc Superbike. Higbee also won the Battle Of The Twins Heavyweight contest, but lost out to Randolph in Formula Twins Heavyweight competition. Randolph also won the Open Superstock race, with Gary Orr taking the win in Open Superbike.
