A Day For Speed: Multiple Lap Records Tumbled at Willow Springs This Weekend. Perfect weather conditions gave Willow Springs Motorcycle Club members the perfect opportunity to go fast, and many of them took advantage of those conditions to reset class lap records. With club officials still sorting through the shattered wreckage of the record books, the results posted at www.MyLaps.com show that at least seven official new class lap records were set this weekend, and an eighth may have been set as well. That represents new class records in nearly a quarter of the 33 classes that Willow Springs Motorcycle Club offers. Most of the records were set during the time frame from 10:13 a.m. Pacific time on Sunday morning to 11:56 a.m. under clear skies and bright sunshine. The Weather Underground weather service reported that during this time frame, the temperature hovered between 66.9 and 72.0 degrees Fahrenheit, with the wind varying from completely calm to less than 3.5 miles an hour. AMA star Steve Rapp reset two lap records, posting a 1:21.812 time in 600cc Superstock and a 1:21.733 in Formula Two. Karl Lowry also posted two new lap records, with a 1:22.337 in 750cc Superbike and a 1:21.811 in 750cc Superstock. Jeff Stern reset the Formula 40 Heavyweight lap record with a time of 1:22.748, Andy Palmer lowered the Formula Twins Lightweight record to 1:28.572 and Kenny Kopecky reset the 500cc Singles lap record at 1:40.101. According to the lap times recorded by the track’s automated scoring system, Jason Curtis ran a 1:21.268 in Open Superstock, which would be under the existing class record. However, the club’s computer system did not recognize that lap as an official record. Club timing and scoring officials are trying to determine whether it was, in fact a new class record. More, from a press release issued by West Coast GP Cycles: West Coast GP Cycles Celebrates Class Lap Record at Willow Springs West Coast GP Cycles’ Andy Palmer set a new lap record in the Formula Twins Lightweight class at Willow Springs on Sunday with the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club. Riding a Michelin-shod, Track Daz-backed Suzuki SV650 developed and tuned at West Coast GP Cycles, Palmer known as “Sideshow Bob” at Willow clocked a 1:28.572 lap around Willow’s 2.5-mile main circuit, averaging 101.612 miles an hour. Palmer was even faster in the 550 Superbike class, with a best lap of 1:28.406, an average of 101.803 mph, but was unable to reach the current lap record in that class. Palmer won both Formula Twins Lightweight which his shop sponsors and 550 Superbike on Sunday, when the track conditions were nearly perfect and several class lap records fell. Palmer says the bike was developed to take the class lap record this year, and to contend for the class championship with WSMC in 2008, as well as compete in selected WERA West and AFM races. Michael Gougis, riding a West Coast GP Cycles-tuned, Twin Works Factory-built Suzuki SV500 on Dunlops, took the win in Lightweight Twins. West Coast GP Cycles is located at 11900 W. Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles, 90064, and offers performance tuning and accessories for street and race motorcycles. For more information, contact the shop at 310.477.0997.
