TigerTeam Racing’s Jeff Tigert checked out to a clear win in the Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula 1 race at Willow Springs International Raceway Sunday, making it three wins in a row in the headline race for the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club this year.
Tigert, aboard his American Honda-sponsored, Dunlop-shod CBR1000RR, was the only rider to dip into the 1:21 range, clicking off a best lap of 1:21.689 en route to a 5.139 second win over Karl Lowry.
“I just got a good launch,” Tigert said after leading all 20 laps of the main event and taking home $3000 in WSMC purse money for the win. “This thing just works so good it comes off the corners incredibly well.”
Lowry, aboard a new, Dunlop-shod 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 for the first time, picked his way carefully to second by the third lap and eased away, with more than a six-second gap over the battle for third at the end of the race.
“I never let up the lap times showed it,” Lowry said. “I love the sound of that thing.”
Jeremy Toye had the Roadracingworld.com project CBR1000RR in front of AMA regular and 2004 AMA Superstock champion Aaron Gobert at the line, but just barely. After swapping the final podium spot back and forth over the last few laps, Toye put his head down and cranked off a 1:22.736 lap on his final circuit, enough to edge Gobert by 0.595-second. AMA regular David “Aussie Dave” Anthony was fifth on his GSX-R1000, ahead of fellow AMA Pros Reno Karimian and Shawn Higbee.
“I let it hang out on that last lap,” Toye said. “We were all-in on that one.”
Roadracing World’s John Ulrich crashed his Yamaha TZ250 at 12,000 rpm (basically as high as it revs, or redline) in sixth gear out in Turn Eight during practice on Saturday afternoon, escaping with abrasions and bruises. Ulrich made the Roadracingworld.com 250cc Grand Prix grid on Sunday and finished a battered second behind former AMA 250cc Grand Prix star Marcello Del Guidice, also on a TZ250.
