WSMC: Toye Takes Toyota Formula One Thriller At Willow Springs

Jeremy Toye looked unstoppable after morning warm-up on Sunday, having run one of the fastest laps ever turned by a motorcycle at Willow Springs International Raceway.

But the Toyota Gold Cup Unlimited Formula One race at the combined Willow Springs Motorcycle Club/California State Championship round in September was anything but a rout.

Karl Lowry had his Graves Motorsports-backed, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R1 working well, and he and Toye dueled to the finish of the 12-lap, 30-mile main event on the 2.5-mile main track.

In the end, it was Toye on the Roadracingworld.com/San Diego BMW Motorcycles/Locust Storage BMW S1000RR over Lowry by 0.157-seconds at the finish line.

In the morning, before the desert heat came up, Toye was flying, cracking off a 1:19.861 lap that’s an average of 112.696 miles an hour on the Lee’s Cycle Services developed, Dunlop-shod BMW. And even though he had a low-speed crash later in practice, Toye still won the Open Modified Production and Open Superbike races, setting new lap records in each class. Toye set the Open Superbike mark at 1:20.142, faster than the Formula One lap record set by Jeff Tigert in November 2009.

But when the Formula One race came around and Toye shot to the front, the best he could do was a 1:20.394 on the second lap, and his lap times trended slower as the race wore on.

Meanwhile, Lowry had stepped up, throwing down a 1:20.762 one of his fastest laps ever at Willow and slowly erased the gap to Toye. The two were nose-to-tail as the last lap started, and Lowry drove up alongside Toye as the pair crested the hill over Turn Six and fired down the back straight. The pair shot through the fastest turn in the west, Turn Eight, in sixth gear, side-by-side. Finally, Lowry yielded the spot, and Toye held him off at the finish.

The September round was not only the last round of the California State Championship, but also featured the first endurance race held at Willow Springs in several years. The overall win went to Team Cycleheads (Neil Atterbury/Jesse Carter/Harley Barnes), who also won the Heavyweight Superstock class. Second overall was Team Allstars Relentless Racing (Armen Manougian/Curtis Adams/Jeff Stern/Reno Karminian) and third was Team Guardian (Robert Chavez/Matthias Jasinek).
