Yamaha is discontinuing its YZF-R6 middleweight supersport model after 2020, but Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A. may continue supporting the popular machine with road racing contingency awards in 2021.
To get the best information, Roadracing World called Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A. Racing Division Manager Mike Guerra (who has been working in Yamaha’s Racing Department for over 30 years) and asked him if Yamaha plans to support the YZF-R6 with contingency in 2021.
“That’s a good question and that’s one that I think everyone wants to know and deserves to know,” said Guerra. “Decisions have not been made yet. I anticipate that yes there will be, but honestly, we’re still working on the YZ side of things first. That always takes precedent because the [off-road/Supercross] season starts earlier than road racing. But it’s on the map and it’s one of the discussion points. I think that’s the target, but until everything is approved, we don’t know.”
Guerra said that he is retiring at the end of 2020 and Tom Halverson will take over his role in charge of the racing contingency programs.
