Aaron Yates earned Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki its first-ever AMA American Superbike pole position during qualifying Thursday at Daytona International Speedway. Yates lapped the 2.9-mile infield road course in 1:38.324 on his GSX-R1000, which just held off Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing’s Larry Pegram, who led every practice so far at the event but qualified second with a 1:38.372 on his Ducati 1098R. “We’re real happy to get the Jordan Suzuki up on pole position, for sure. It’s our first time ever for the team in the Superbike class,” said Yates, who has been on the Superbike pole position six other times in his career but could not immediately remember exactly when he last started a Superbike race from the pole. “For sure the conditions weren’t really ideal out there to go real fast. We were working on setup the whole time, the whole session, all sessions, just making real small adjustments trying to get the bike ready for the race. We had our tire strategy planned out pretty good, and it worked out for us.” Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden (1:38.715) and Blake Young (1:38.783) captured the third and fourth starting spots, respectively, on the front row. Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Josh Hayes (1:39.334), National Guard Suzuki’s Jake Zemke (1:39.533), Pat Clark Motorsports’ Ben Bostrom (1:39.598) and Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich (1:40.140) earned starting spots on row two of the grid.
