Carter Cleans House in Texas and Crowned USGPRU National Champion Odenton, MD. The USGPRU National Championship powered by AlwaysOnline.net was determined this weekend at the very high speed Texas World Speedway in College Station, TX. The top 125GP and 250GP riders in the US and Canada assembled to fight for the title of National Champion and to claim a piece of the $10,000 purse. Garrett Carter won $3300 and was clearly the class of the field all weekend as he dominated both qualifying and the races. In the 125GP by Acid Cigars, it came down to this final race to determine the National Champion. Carter and Will Gruy had only 6 points separating them in the championship chase. Whoever wins the race, wins the title of 125GP National Champion for 2005. Carter, on pole position, nailed the launch and put his Aprilia RS125 into the lead. By the end of lap 1, he had already stretched his lead to two seconds over Tyler Reiswig and Will Gruy. An incident in turn 9 brought out the red flag and the race was stopped for a complete restart. On the restart, Garrett again put his Stargel tuned Aprilia back into the lead. The pack of angry hornets following the lead group was absolutely flying as they tried to keep the leader in sight. Nobi Iso led Will Gruy, followed by Tyler Reiswig, Tyler McDonald, Stewart Aitken-Cade, and 14 year-old, Tommy Aquino. Carter checked out at about 1-2 seconds per lap rate. Gruy put his head down and made the pass on Iso. Not to let Carter out of sight, Gruy was able to pull back some time at the half way point. But Carter proved to be too fast in the end and walked away with the win, followed by Gruy and Iso. Carter was crowned the fasted 125GP pilot in the United States with a total of 284 points. He was closely followed by Will Gruy with 280 points, and Joshua Day with 198. The championship chase in the DialitinTracktime.com 250GP race wasn’t so tight coming into this weekend. Floridian, Josh Day had a commanding 46 point lead over Carter. Day simply needed to finish in 20th place or better to sew up his first national title. But Day’s trusty old ’91 Yamaha TZ250 was having transmission problems and they decided to send him out on his ’04 Honda RS125 just to be safe. The skies opened up only 15 minutes before the race was set to begin and completely soaked the racetrack. The field scrambled for rain tires, but for many it was too late to make a change and they had to go out on slicks. At the green flag, Zach Lee put his Honda RS250 out in front, only to be quickly overtaken by young Carter aboard his Aprilia RS250. The rain soaked track was exceptionally slippery and caused several riders to bin it. One of which was championship hopeful, Josh Day. He was able to limp the Honda back to the pits but his race for the championship was over. Tyler Reiswig and Nobi Iso duked it out for second place right up to the last lap. Iso made the pass on Reiswig, but nearly crashed in the last turn, allowing Reiswig to reclaim the position. Series president, Stewart Aitken-Cade, came back from a miserable start, working his way back up through the pack to claim 4th place over Bill Syfan on the last lap. Carter went on to win in dominating style to claim his second championship of the weekend with a total of 200 points. He was closely followed by Joshua Day with 196 points and Californian Vincent Rolleri rode a borrowed bike to barely beat Tyler Reiswig for the 3rd place finish by a mere 8 points. Carter and Gruy won the USGPRU Teen Challenge which gets them each a VIP trip to the 2006 MotoGP event at Laguna Seca to watch the best that the world has to offer. This will hopefully give them a little glimpse into what may be in store for them in their racing futures. They also each won a set of custom Rev’it Leathers for their championship efforts. Long-time sponsor, Motion Pro Tools, awarded over $900 in tools to various competitors throughout the pack as well. The USGPRU would like to thank the wonderful folks down at the CMRA for all the hospitality they extended to all of our racers this past weekend. From the BBQ dinner to the reserved garage spaces, you made us all feel right at home. Thank you very much from all the racers and staff of the USGPRU. We had a great time!
