Odenton, MD. The 4th round of the USGPRU’s West Coast Region headed to the high desert of Rosamond to host the “young gun” showdown at the windy Streets of Willow this past weekend. Due to a lack of electronic scoring, Saturday’s qualifying consisted of a 5 lap heat race. Jon Schendel aboard his CN Racing Honda crossed the line first with youngsters Tommy Aquino and Tyler Reiswig hot on his heels. Another youngster, Kyle Ferris, and veteran racer Ben Solis rounded out the top 5. Cameron Beaubier overcame an earlier high side to qualify 6th with Bryce Prince, Kid’s: Don’t Smoke!/Roadracingworld.com’s rider Elena Myers, Scott Gilbert and Tyler Oden respectively qualifying in 7th, 8th,12th and 13th to round out the remainder of the young guns. In the 250 heat race, it was Ryan Ferris aboard his Infinity Racing RS250 taking pole with Reiswig and Schendel rounding out the top 3. Tommy Aquino was the top young gun qualifying in 4th with Myers, Oden, Kyle Ferris, and Beaubier qualifying in 7th, 9th, 12th and 18th positions. Sunday heated up early with the temperature getting to 100 degrees and the famous Willow Springs wind blowing steady. Tommy Aquino took the hole shot in the 125 race and never looked back running a perfect race and taking the checkered after 14 blistering laps. Aquino was able to run away from the field thanks in part to a 7 bike battle for 2nd. Ben Solis was at the front of the train followed by Schendel, Beaubier, Reiswig, Ferris, Prince, and Myers. Schendel was able to mount a challenge in lap 4 and the two riders swapped positions until Solis crashed in lap 6 allowing Schendel to take 2nd and pull a small gap from the 5 youngsters nipping at his heels. The final podium spot came down to the wire as all 5 young guns battle for position. Kyle Ferris mounted a charged from 5th on lap 6 to over take Reiswig on lap 7, who fought a loose footpeg all race, and Beaubier on lap 9. Beaubier poised himself for a last turn pass but Ferris was able to get a great drive coming down the straight to hold off Beubier by half a wheel! The 250 race had Reiswig taking the hole shot and lead Ryan Ferris and Vince Rolleri for the first 4 laps until Ferris crashed in the bowl bringing out a red flag. On the 8 lap restart, Reiswig again took the hole shot but crashed in turn 3 allowing Rolleri to take the lead. Reiswig would limp home to complete the race in 12th. Rolleri looked very comfortable to take his first win of the season when a mechanical on lap 3 forced him out and the 250 race became another epic 125 battle between Kyle Ferris, Jon Schendel, Tommy Aquino and Cameron Beaubier. Ferris successfully parried all attacks for the lead position to take the win that he later dedicated to his brother Ryan. Aquino made a last lap pass on Schendel and relegated the seasoned veteran to 3rd. The 250 race also claimed Kid’s: Don’t Smoke!/Roadracingworld.com’s rider Elena Myers on lap 2, and Willow Springs regular Mark Watts on lap 8. The USGPRU would like to thank Al Lyons, Sherry, Wayne and all the crew from CMRRA for a successful weekend. We would also like to thank Desi from Red Bull for the posh hospitality tent complete with Xbox and cool Red Bull drinks.
